국문 초록

본 연구는 짐 쉐리단의 영화 『아버지의 이름으로』를 중심으로 아일랜드와 영국 간의 갈등관계와 영국의 의도된 조작으로 인해 아일랜드인이 어떻게 테러리스트로 낙인찍혔는지에 대한 과정을 살펴본다. 쉐리단은 ‘길포드 4인’ 사건으로 알려진 실화사건을 형상화 함으로써 영국정부가 아일랜드인을 테러리스트로 동일시하거나, 심지어 테러 사건과 무관한 평범한 아일랜드인까지 테러리스트로 조작한 불합리한 상황을 전달한다. 달리 말해, 이 영화는 테러리스트로 누명을 쓴 ‘게리 콘론’의 이야기를 다룸으로써 영국이 아일랜드를 억압한 역사뿐만 아니라 테러리즘의 양가적 의미 역시 상기시키고 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the relationship of the conflicts between Ireland and England, and the process in which the Irish were stigmatized as “terrorists” because of fabrications by British authorities, by focusing on Jim Sheridan’s 1993 film, In the Name of Father. By treating a true historical event, the trial of “The Guildford Four,” Sheridan shows how the Irish people are not related with the actual terror attack. This film spotlights the history of the mechanisms of how the British government oppressed the Irish people and at the same time discloses the ambivalent meanings of “terrorism” through Gerry Conlon who is falsely branded as a terrorist.
