국문 초록

동물의 울음은 예이츠 작품에서 흔히 중요한 전환의 순간을 나타낸다. 이를테면, 노시인에게 혼란을 주어 “자신의 주제”를 상실하게 만드는데 그의 말기 시 「남자와 반향」에서 공격당한 토끼의 울음 같은 경우이다. 이 논문은 예이츠의 모든 작품에서 동물의 소리의 구체적인 경우를 연구한다. 본 논문의 논지는 이러한 노래, 울음, 울부짖음은 자연, 문화, 및 초자연성을 넘나들거나 강화한다. 이것들은 인간중심 혹은 동물과 인간의 구분에 혼란을 야기하여 종간의 감정이입이 생기게 하지만 한편 서로 간 지울 수 없는 상이함을 드러내기도 한다. 동물의 울음은 예이츠에게 시적 도구를 제공하여 하나의 중요한 모더니스트의 딜레마를 들춰내어 표현하기 어려운 것을 나타내게 한다.

영문 초록

Animal cries often signal crucial moments of transition in Yeats’s work, such as the cry of the stricken rabbit in his late poem “The Man and the Echo,” which distracts the old poet, making him lose “his theme.” This essay seeks to explore the specific instance of the animal sound throughout Yeats’s poetry. It argues that these songs, cries, and shrieks both cross and reinforce the thresholds between the natural, the cultural, and the supernatural. They disturb anthropocentric or humanist distinctions between animal and human, generating affective recognition across species while also asserting their unbridgeable alterity. Animal cries provide Yeats with a poetic device to broach a key modernist dilemma: the representation of the ineffable.
