국문 초록

블레이크는 『유리젠의 서』에서 신화적 상상력으로 우주의 창조와 인류의 탄생을 노래한다. 블레이크의 우주의 창조는 그리스 신화와 『성경』에서 우주의 창조과정과 다른 아주 색다른 그만의 독창적인 상상력의 세계이다. 블레이크는 착하고 선한 하느님이 아닌 분노하는 유리젠이 지옥처럼 우주를 창조해 가는 과정을 이 시에 묘사한다. 더불어 블레이크는 인간의 창조과정도 그리스 신화와 『성경』에서처럼 진흙으로 인간을 창조하는 것이 아니라 영혼 세계에 살고 있던 유리젠의 아들들과 딸들의 신체가 축소되어 인류의 새로운 종족으로 탄생되는 것을 노래한다. 이는 그 당시에 영국인들의 심리상태와 사회상을 작품에 이미지로 반영한 것이다. 그래서 우리는 블레이크의 『유리젠의 서』를 읽으면서 그의 독창적인 상상력의 세계로 빠져들 수밖에 없다.

영문 초록

William Blake sings of the creation of the universe and the birth of humanity through mythic imagination in The [First] Book of Urizen. Blake’s cosmic creation is a unique realm of imaginative prowess distinct from the creation processes of Greek mythology and The Holy Bible. In this poem, Blake depicts a wrathful Urizen, not a benevolent and kind God, creating a universe akin to hell. Additionally, Blake sings of the human creation process, suggesting that humans were not created from mud as in Greek mythology and The Holy Bible, but were born as a new race from the diminished bodies of Urizen’s sons and daughters existing in the spiritual world. They show the psychological and societal conditions of the British people at that time as imagery. Thus, reading Blake’s The [First] Book of Urizen, we can’t help immersing ourselves in his imaginative and unique world.
