생태 평화와 통합 생태론: 평화 구축을 위한 새로운 패러다임

국문 초록

다양한 자연 생태계가 공동으로 존재하며 생명활동을 이어가고 있는 공동의 집인 지구에서 인간의 활동이 생태계에 미친 영향은 지배적이며 폭력적인 양상을 보였다. 그렇지만 자연 생태계와 불가분의 관계로 의존하고 있는 인간은 자연에 대한 폭력이 인간 사회의 불평등한 구조로 되돌아 표출되고 있다. 평화 연구에 있어서 적극적 평화 개념은생태계와 환경의 지속 가능 문제를 포함하여 사회의 구조적 변화를 통한 평화 구축을 다루어 왔지만 인간 중심적 관점을 탈피하지 못하고 있다. 본 논문은 프란치스코 교황의회칙『찬미받으소서』에서 제시한 통합 생태론을 기반으로 인간 중심적 ‘환경 평화’를 넘어서는 생태 평화에 관한 새로운 패러다임을 탐구한다. 생태계의 파괴가 눈에 띄지 않게진행되며 인간과 자연에 장기적으로 해악을 끼치는 것을 설명한 ‘느린 폭력’ 개념은 생태 폭력의 본질을 설명하고 있다. 자연을 도구적으로 바라보며 지배적 태도를 통해 인간활동이 생태계 미친 폭력은 단순히 물리적 파괴에 그치지 않고, 생태 위기를 통해 사회적 불평등을 심화시키며 인간의 삶에 영향을 미친다. 인간과 자연의 상호 의존성을 강조하는 ‘통합 생태론’은 모든 생명체가 고유한 가치를 지니고 있으며 생태계의 주체로 인식하는 것이 필요하다고 본다. 통합 생태론은 경제, 정치, 사회, 문화적 관점을 결합하여생태 위기를 포괄적으로 해결하려는 시도로서, 단순한 환경문제를 넘어 생태계의 조화로운 공존이 인간 공동체의 평화에 근본이 된다는 가치를 지향한다. 기존의 환경 평화 구축 논의가 주로 인간 사회의 평화를 중심으로 논의 되었다면, 통합 생태론을 기반으로하는 평화 논의를 통해 생태계의 모든 구성원이 주체로서 고려되며 조화로운 공존을 이루는 방향으로 평화론의 확장을 제안한다.

영문 초록

On Earth, our common home of diverse natural ecosystems, the impact of human activities has been dominant and violent. However, humans are inextricably dependent on natural ecosystems, and violence against nature is reflected in the inequitable structure of human society. In peace studies, the concept of positive peace has addressed peace-building through structural changes in society including sustainability of ecosystems, but it has failed to break away from the anthropocentric perspective. This paper explores a new paradigm for ecological peace that goes beyond anthropocentric 'environmental peace' based on the integral ecology proposed by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si'. The violence that human activities inflict on ecosystems through dominant attitudes toward nature is not limited to physical destruction, but also affects human lives by deepening social inequalities through ecological crises. Integral ecology recognizes that all living things have inherent value and need to be recognized as subject in the ecosystem. Integral ecology is an attempt to address the ecological crisis comprehensively by combining economic, political, social, and cultural perspectives, and it goes beyond mere environmental concerns to the value that harmonious coexistence of ecosystems is fundamental to peace in human communities. While existing discussions on environmental peace-building have centered on peace in human societies, the peace discussion based on integral ecology proposes an expansion of peace theory in the direction of achieving harmonious coexistence in which all members of the ecosystem are considered as subjects.
