정서 이방인의 대안적 가능성: 마거릿 애트우드의 『시녀 이야기』를 중심으로

국문 초록

이번 미국 대선 직후, 마거릿 애트우드의 『시녀 이야기』의 판매량은 급증하기 시작했다. 이는 2016년 미국 대선 때 상황과 유사하다. 이 현상은 작품 속 길리어드 공화국의 억압이 소설의 설정으로만 여겨질 수 있는지 생각해 볼 틈을 마련한다. 본고에서는 우선 국가 이상에 대한 사라 아메드(Sara Ahmed)의 논의를 빌려 길리어드 공화국이 개개인의 정서를 조정하여 정서 공동체(affective community)를 형성함으로써 국가 이상을 유지하려 한다는 사실을 들추어낸다. 그다음으로는 아메드의 고집스러움(willfulness)이라는 개념에 착안하여 모이라(Moira)의 정동을 탐구하고, 그녀가 길리어드 공화국의 전체주의 질서에 흠집을 내는 방식을 파헤친다. 마지막으로는 오브프레드의 행동과 정동 사이에 간극이 벌어져 있고, 그녀의 정동적 방향이 모이라의 것과 크게 다르지 않음을 지적한다. 이 단계에서는 오브프레드와 모이라를 정서 이방인(affect alien)으로 이해하고, 이들이 길리어드 체제에서 대안적인 가능성을 함의하고 있음을 규명한다. 이 연구는 억압적인 사회 구조에 짓눌리기보다 대안적인 연대와 협력 속에서 우리가 어떻게 살아갈지 지속적으로 그 답을 찾아가는 과정에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

After the 2024 U.S. election, sales of The Handmaid’s Tale have surged. This phenomenon raises the question of whether the Republic of Gilead is merely fictional. Based on this perspective, the paper first explores Sara Ahmed’s discussion of the national ideal and shows how Gilead maintains its political order by manipulating individual affect into the affective community. This paper then investigates Moira’s affect through Ahmed’s concept of willfulness and analyzes how she disrupts Gilead's totalitarian system. Lastly, the paper examines the gap between Offred's actions and her affect, positioning both Offred and Moira as the affect aliens. This suggests that they offer alternative paths in Gilead. This study can contribute to the process of seeking answers to how we can live through alternative solidarity and cooperation, rather than being oppressed by repressive social structures.
