국문 초록

이 연구는 메이슨과 콜의 교육 사상과 실제를 통하여 새로운 자유교육의 방향을 고찰한다. 교육의 역사에서 자유교육의 전통은 주로 아리스토텔레스, 피터스, 허스트의 합리주의적 관점에 의하여, 합리적 지성의 계발에 초점을 둔 지식의 형식으로서의 교과 중심 교육과정의 발달로 연결되었다. 근래에 발달한 또 다른 자유교육의 접근은 주로 학생의 능력과 경험 및 현실에의 적용에 초점을 둔 역량 중심 교육과정과 연결된다. 그런데, 교과 중심 교육과정의 접근은 학생의 삶과 경험에서 분리되는 경향이 있으며, 역량 중심 교육과정은 애초의 취지와는 달리, 외부에서 부과된 경쟁력에 초점을 두면서 학생의 자발적 동기와 의지를 무시하는 경향을 초래하였다. 이러한 문제의식에서, 이 연구는 메이슨과 콜의 사상을 통해 ‘학습자의 생동감 있는, 자유로운 내재적 동기와 참여를 통해, 삶의 실제적 문제와 과제들을 주도적으로 성찰하고 해결해 나갈 수 있는 의지와 능력을 키우는 활동’으로 자유교육을 정의하고, 이에 근거하여 한국 교육 현실의 문제와 관련하여 실제적인 자유교육의 방향을 제시한다. 메이슨과 콜은 공통적으로 첫째, 학생의 잠재력과 가능성을 중심으로 한 교육을 주장하며, 둘째, 입시 위주의 통제적 교육을 비판하고, 셋째, 삶에 실천적으로 연결되며 적용되는 교육을 추구하며, 넷째, 학생의 흥미와 상상력을 살리는 이야기 교육의 활용을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the evolution of free education through the educational theories and practices of Mason and Kold. Historically, free education has been associated with a subject-centered curriculum that emphasizes the development of rational intelligence, primarily influenced by the rationalist views of Aristotle, Peters, and Hirst. More recently, an alternative approach to free education has emerged, primarily associated with a competency-based curriculum that concentrates on students' skills, experiences, and their application to real-world scenarios. However, a subject-centered curriculum often disconnects from students' lives and experiences, while the competency-based curriculum, despite its original intent, tends to overlook students' voluntary motives by emphasizing external competitiveness. With this critical perspective, this study defines free education as an activity that develops the will and ability to proactively reflect on and solve practical problems and tasks in life through the lively and free intrinsic motivation and participation of learners' thoughts. It also suggests a direction for practical free education that addresses the current educational challenges in Korea. Mason and Kold advocate for an education system that prioritizes student potential, criticize the controlled education model centered on entrance exams, promote an education that is practically relevant and applicable to real life, and recommend the use of storytelling in education to enhance student interest and imagination.
