‘앙가주망’과 언어적 존재로서의 책임: 사르트르의 관점에서 본 읽기와 쓰기

국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 사르트르의 실존주의 철학에서 ‘앙가주망(engagement)’의 위치와 중요성을 고찰하고, 앙가주망이 언어적 존재로서의 인간이 지는 책임과 불가분의 관계에 놓여 있음을 밝힌 뒤, 그 구체적 실천으로 ‘책임으로서의 읽기’와 ‘타인의 고통에 접속하는 쓰기’의 교육적 의미를 재고하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 먼저 사르트르의 관점에서 자유, 책임, 무, 자기기만 등의 주요 개념이 가진 의미를 살펴보며 앙가주망이란 한 인간이 사회적 책임을 직접 제작해나가는 창조적이며 비판적인 정신에서 시작되는 것임을 제시한다. 다음으로는 『존재와 무』에서 논의된 대타존재로서의 인간이 그 자체로 이미 언어적 존재이며 그들이 타인과 맺는 관계 역시 언어적이라는 점에서 앙가주망은 하나의 언어적 시도임을 보이고자 한다. 마지막으로, 『문학이란 무엇인가』에 나타난 논의를 중심으로 글 읽기를 ‘책임’의 관점에서 해석함으로써 이를 하나의 능동적인 사회적 참여 행위로 제안하며 사르트르의 시선에서 작가와 독자가 글을 통해 맺는 독특한 관계를 해명한다. 또한 ‘씀’을 통해 타자의 삶을 상상하고 그들의 서사에 뛰어드는 경험의 중요성을 밝히며 글쓰기가 주목받지 못한 사회적 약자의 억압과 차별을 가시화하는 작업으로 작용할 수 있음을 제안한다. 이 글은 읽기와 쓰기라는 경험을 ‘기초기본교육’이나 ‘문해력교육’과 같은 기존의 틀을 넘어서는 존재적인 차원에서 논의할 것을 요청한다. 이는 활자와 문학의 위치가 위태로워지는 사회에서 언어가 가진 앙가주망적 성격을 적극적으로 검토하고 그 교육적 의미를 상기하고자 함이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the role and importance of engagement within Sartre's existentialism, particularly its inherent link to the responsibility of human beings as linguistic entities. It reconsiders the educational implications of reading as a responsibility and writing as a means of connecting to the suffering of others, framing these as practices of engagement. First, by analyzing Sartre's key concepts of freedom, responsibility, nothingness, and bad faith (mauvaise foi), this study shows that engagement emerges from the creative and critical spirit of individuals who actively produce social responsibility. The study then argues that engagement is fundamentally a linguistic endeavor, because humans, being inherently linguistic beings, form relationships through language, as discussed in Being and Nothingness (1943). Drawing on Sartre's reflections in What is Literature? (1948), it reinterprets the act of reading from the perspective of responsibility, positioning it as an active form of social participation. It examines the unique relationship between writer and reader, established through literature, from Sartre's perspective. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the importance of imagining the lives of others through writing, highlighting how writing can make visible the oppression and discrimination faced by marginalized social groups. It calls for a discussion of the experiences of reading and writing on an existential level, beyond the existing frameworks of basic education or literacy education. As such, it requires actively examining the engaged nature of language in a society where the status of language and literature is increasingly precarious, and reminding us of its educational significance.
