국문 초록

본 연구는 선택적 함구증으로 추정되는 해찬이의 소통 경험을 탐색함으로써 선택적 함구증을 지닌 영유아를 이해하고 이를 바탕으로 그들을 위한 교육방안의 기초를 제공하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 선택적 함구증으로 추정되는 만 4세 장해찬을 참여자로 선정하고 관찰기록, 해찬이 어머니와의 면담, 연구자 저널 등을 수집하여 분석하였다. 연구 문제를 상기하면서 수집된 자료들을 반복적으로 읽어나가며 중요한 낱말, 어구, 문장 등을 추출하여 유사한 내용끼리 묶어 범주화시키고, 그 범주들로부터 주제어를 뽑아 재구성하는 작업을 하였다. 또한, 분석의 기준을 행위자의 관점으로 정하고, 연구 참여자의 행위와 그 의미를 도출하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 해찬이의 소통 방법은 첫째, 눈빛으로 소통하기이다. 해찬이는 다른 사람이 자신을 인식할 때까지 지속적으로 바라보며, 눈웃음과 인상 찌푸리기를 통해 자신의 의견을 표현했다. 둘째, 몸짓으로 소통하기이다. 해찬이는 관심 있는 대상에게 가까이 다가가고, 손짓 등을 통해 자신의 의견을 전달함으로써 적극적인 소통을 시도했다. 셋째, 글자와 구체물로 소통하기이다. 해찬이는 글자를 통해 자신의 의견을 표현하고 확성기와 투명 가림막과 같은 구체물을 활용하여 소통했다. 다음으로 해찬이가 하는 소통의 의미는 첫째, 타인의 행동을 반영하면서 함께 하기이다. 해찬이는 다른 사람의 행위를 관찰하고 그 행위에 동화되면서 비슷한 행동을 보였다. 둘째, 다른 사람과의 상호작용을 통해 행동이 변형되는 과정이다. 해찬이는 상호작용을 통해 자신의 행위를 변형시켜 소통을 이어갔다. 셋째, 자신의 존재를 유지하기이다. 해찬이는 자신의 존재를 다른 사람에게 인식시키려는 모습을 보였다. 본 연구를 통해 선택적 함구증을 지닌 아이들을 위해 단순히 말하지 않는 문제를 해결하는 기존의 언어치료 프로그램을 넘어서 다양한 소통 방식을 활용한 프로그램을 개발할 수 있는 기반을 마련할 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the communication experiences of Haechan, a child suspected of having selective mutism, in order to understand young children with selective mutism and provide a foundation for educational strategies tailored to them. For this purpose, a four-year-old child named Jang Haechan, suspected of having selective mutism, was selected as the participant. Data were collected and analyzed through observation records, interviews with Haechan’s mother, and the researcher’s journal. The data were repeatedly reviewed, and key words, phrases, and sentences were extracted, grouped into categories, and reorganized into themes. The analysis was conducted from the perspective of the actor, focusing on the participant’s actions and their meanings. three key communication methods were identified. First, Haechan used eye contact to communicate, expressing his thoughts through sustained gazes and facial expressions like smiles and frowns. Second, he communicated through gestures, actively approaching objects or people of interest and using hand movements to convey his opinions. Third, Haechan utilized letters and tangible objects, such as a megaphone or transparent screen, to express himself. The meanings behind his communication were also analyzed, revealing that Haechan mirrored others' actions, adapted his behaviors through interaction, and actively sought to maintain his presence within social settings. The findings suggest that beyond traditional speech therapy, there is a need to develop programs that incorporate diverse communication methods for children with selective mutism. This study provides a foundation for creating such educational approaches.
