Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore how Chinese cinema serves as a medium for education, influencing cultural perceptions and societal values both domestically and internationally. By analyzing the educational narratives within Chinese films, the study aims to highlight the films’ role in shaping educational ideologies and their broader societal implications.
Design/Methodology/Approach - This research employs a qualitative analysis of selected Chinese films, examining the narrative techniques, character development, and dialogue used to convey educational messages. The study also explores the social and cultural impact of these films, drawing on existing literature and case studies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the educational role of Chinese cinema.
Findings - Chinese cinema transcends its entertainment function, serving as a conduit for educational ideologies that resonate with audiences. Films like “No Questions Asked” and “Better Days” not only entertain but also provoke thought and inspire societal reflection on issues such as national spirit, campus violence, and social responsibility. Chinese films effectively integrate educational themes through storytelling, character portrayal, and direct dialogue, thereby influencing audience perceptions of education and societal values. Moreover, films like “Youth” and “Dearest” highlight the complex nature of societal challenges and encourage audiences to engage with these issues critically. The portrayal of ordinary individuals in historical narratives, such as in “My People, My Country” and “My People, My Parents”, underscores the significant role of individuals in national development, thereby fostering a sense of national pride and cultural identity.
Research Implications - The study suggests that Chinese cinema holds significant potential as a tool for educational influence, extending beyond mere entertainment to impact societal values and cultural identity. The integration of educational narratives within films offers a unique avenue for disseminating educational messages and shaping public perceptions. Future research could explore the impact of specific educational themes within Chinese films on international audiences, as well as the role of cinema in fostering cross-cultural understanding and dialogue.
