국문 초록

본 논문은 2019년부터 2022년 한국거래 유가증권시장에 상장된 기업을 바탕으로 한국ESG기준원(KCGS)의 ESG평가등급과 KRX ESG 정보공개 포털에서 제공하는 MSCI, 무디스의 ESG 평가데이터를 바탕으로 국내외 ESG 평가 여부 및 결과가 기업의 부채비용에 미치는 영향에 대해 실증분석 하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 국내 평가사 KCGS의 통합등급은 기업의 부채비용에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는다. KCGS ESG 평가등급 결과는 대출기관으로부터 낮은 이자율로 인한 적은 이자 비용의 혜택을 가져오지 못하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 해외 평가사 MSCI의 ESG 평가 여부는 부채비용에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하나, 해외 평가사 무디스의 ESG 평가 여부는 부채비용에 유의미한 영향을 미친다. 이는 해외 평가사의 ESG 평가 여부가 부채비용에 미치는 영향이 평가기관별로 달라질 수 있음을 보여준다. 셋째, 해외 평가사의 ESG 평가 여부에 대한 국내 평가사 KCGS ESG 평가 결과의 조절 효과는 차별적인 영향을 미친다. 해외 평가사 Moodys의 ESG 평가 여부의 부채비용의 관계에 KCGS ESG 평가 결과는 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났으나, MSCI의 ESG 평가 여부와 부채비용의 관계에는 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이 같은 차별적 결과는 우선, MSCI나 무디스의 ESG 평가 여부가 KCGS와 결합할 경우, 의도한 성과가 아니라 공개 수준에 따른 등급이 반영되어 부채비용에 대해 위와 같은 결과가 나온 것으로 추론할 수 있다. 또한, 해외 평가사들 평가 간 괴리, 해외 평가사와 국내 평가사 평가 간 괴리 때문으로 추론할 수 있다. 결론적으로, 평가사별 다른 항목과 중요 ESG 이슈에 대한 인식 차이가 있으므로 이에 효과적으로 대응하기 위해서는 다양한 ESG 이슈에 대한 평가 및 이해가 필요하다. 해외 평가사의 평가 여부는 결국 결과에 상관없이 해당 기업의 ESG 정보가 글로벌 이해관계자들에게 널리 공개될 수 있음을 의미한다. 나아가 더 나은 ESG 평가를 얻기 위해 더 높은 수준의 ESG 정보 공개와 성과를 달성할 동기를 가질 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper empirically analyzes the impact of Korean and Global ESG evaluation presence and outcomes on the debt costs of companies listed on the Korea Exchange from 2019 to 2022. It utilizes ESG evaluation grades from the KCGS and evaluation data from MSCI and Moody's provided by the KRX ESG information disclosure portal. The study finds that first, the integrated grade from the domestic rating agency KCGS does not significantly affect a company's cost of debt, indicating that KCGS ESG ratings do not lead to benefits such as lower interest costs from lending institutions. Second, while the presence of an ESG evaluation from the global rating agency MSCI does not significantly impact the cost of debt, Moody's ESG evaluation does have a significant effect. This suggests that the impact of ESG evaluations on debt costs can vary between rating agencies. Third, the interaction between domestic and global rating agencies' ESG evaluations has a differential impact. While KCGS ESG ratings do not significantly affect the relationship between Moody's ESG evaluation presence and cost of debt, they do have a significant impact on the relationship between MSCI's ESG evaluation presence and cost of debt. These differential outcomes suggest that when combined with KCGS ratings, the presence of an ESG evaluation from MSCI or Moody's may not lead to the intended outcomes but rather reflect a rating based on disclosure levels. Additionally, the discrepancies between evaluations from different global rating agencies and between global and Korean rating agencies could be inferred. In conclusion, due to the differences in criteria and recognition of important ESG issues among rating agencies, effective response requires evaluation and understanding of various ESG issues. The presence of an evaluation from a global rating agency ultimately means that a company's ESG information can be widely disclosed to global stakeholders, regardless of the outcome. This, in turn, motivates companies to achieve higher levels of ESG disclosure and performance to obtain better ESG evaluations.
