외국인 중급 유학생의 한국어 음소 인식 및 철자 능력 분석 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국어 외국인 중급 유학생의 음소 인식과 철자 능력을 분석하여, 기초 문식성과 한국어 능력 간 상관관계가 있는가를 도출하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이들은 이를 위해 검사 도구를 제작하고 실험을 실시하였다. 실험 결과를 통해 피험자들의 음소 인식, 철자 능력이 한국어 능력과 상관관계가 있음을 확인하였다. 특히 1음절(CV) 구조의 음소 인식과 철자 검사의 세부 영역인 기본모음, ‘ㅑ’계열 모음, ‘ㅘ’계열 모음에서 한국어 능력과의 상관이 두드러지는 것으로 나타났다. 다음으로 피험자들의 음소 인식과 철자 능력의 정확도를 분석한 결과, 음소 인식 정확도 59.92%, 철자의 정확도는 72.48%로 나타났다. 이것은 한국 모국어 아동을 기준으로 볼 때, 초등학교 1학년 수준에 해당하는 결과이다. 이것은 한국어 외국인 유학생의 기초 문식성이 온전히 발달된 수준이 아니라는 점을 의미한다. 또한 본 연구에서는 학습 부진과 관련하여 유의미한 시사점을 모색하기 위해 진급 집단과 유급 집단의 능력을 비교하였다. 그 결과 유급 집단의 정확도가 진급 집단에 비해 현저히 떨어지는 것을 확인하였다. 이를 통해 음소 인식 능력과 철자 능력이 한국어 능력, 한국어 성취도 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to explored the relationship between basic Korean literacy skills and Korean language proficiency among international students who are learning Korean in a university language institute. Participants’ basic Korean literacy skills were measured by a set of tests including phonemic awareness and spelling. One hundred and eight international students who attended intermediate level Korean language classes participated in this study. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between their basic Korean literacy and Korean language proficiency. In particular, notable correlations with Korean language procificency were observed for basic vowels and the diphthongs ㅑ (ya) and ㅘ (wa), which are integral components of phonemic awareness and spelling tests conducted in a one-syllable (CV) structure. Furthermore, participants’ average accuracy in phonemic awareness test was only 59.92% and the average accuracy in spelling test was 72.48%. Considering that the test items were constructed with basic phonetic features of Korean language and orthography, their Korean literacy skills were found to be pretty limited, which were comparable to the native first-graders in Korea. Authors also compared the basic Korean literacy test scores between two groups who passes language course and who failed the course. The findings revealed that the basic literacy skills of the failed group was significantly lower than that of the passed group, indicating that phonemic awaeness and spelling abilities may affect Korean language proficiency and academic achievements. Authors discussed that Korean literacy of the foreign Korean language students are in needs of atttention among educators and researchers
