최근 제기된 『花郞世紀』 필사본 조작설에 대한 비판적 고찰

국문 초록

『花郞世紀』 필사본이 발견된 이래, 이 사료를 두고 진위논쟁이 계속되어 왔음은 주지의 사실이다. 『화랑세기』 필사본을 사료로 인정하느냐 마느냐에 따라 신라 역사에 대한 이해와 서술은 판이하게 달라질 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 그러므로 이에 대하여 철저한 검증이 있어야 함은 당연하다. 그러나 『화랑세기』 필사본의 진위논쟁에 관한 한, 내면을 들여다보면 그렇게 상식적인 기대만 하고 있기 어렵게 흘러가는 듯하다. 시간이 흐르면서 치밀한 검증보다 자기 학파가 원하는 결론을 조작해 나아가는 경향이 생기고 있기 때문이다. 『화랑세기』 필사본에 대한 진위논쟁은, 1990년대를 중심으로 치열한 논쟁이 벌어졌다. 하지만 2003년 『역사비평』에서 많은 지면을 할애하여 다룬 시점을 기점으로 하여 아이러니컬하게도 논쟁이 수그러드는 경향을 보이고 있다. 특히 2003년과 2007년, 『화랑세기』 필사본을 조작으로 보는 김기흥과 박남수의 논문이 각각 나왔던 이래, 이에 대해서는 아무도 반론을 하지 않고 있는 실정이다. 하지만 필자가 검토해본 결과 이들의 논리에는 맹점이 있었다. 그래서 필사본 수정 내용 비교, 『화랑세기』 원본의 존재 여부에 대한 조사, 이른바 ‘殘本’의 특징과 위작론, 『화랑세기』 殘本과 1·2본 비교를 통한 위작설의 문제점, ‘碧海上白波歌’와 ‘波浪歌’를 근거로 한 위작설의 주제로 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과 설득력 있는 근거와 논리를 갖춘 것이 아님을 확인할 수 있었다고 생각한다. 『화랑세기』 필사본이 조작이건 아니건 어느 쪽을 선택해도 무조건 50%의 확률은 보장되어 있다. 그러니까 어쩌다 결론을 맞추었다고 해도 그것만 가지고는 학문적 의미를 가질 수 없는 것이다. 따라서 근거나 논리 없이 아무 내용이나 갖다 붙인 최근의 연구는, 나중에 『화랑세기』 필사본이 조작임이 밝혀진다고 해도 연구 업적으로서의 의미를 가질 수 없다. 본고에서는 바로 이런 성향을 비판하고 싶은 것이다. 혹시라도 본고의 비판 대상이 된 연구자들이 그때 미처 생각하지 못하여 충분한 근거나 논리 없이 글을 발표할 수밖에 없었다면, 지금이라도 부족한 내용을 보충해서 발표해야 할 것이다. 만약 그렇게 된다면, 과거의 불찰이 없어지는 것은 아니라 해도 현 상태에서 학계에 주는 폐해는 만회할 수 있다. 그렇게 되어 본고 역시 『화랑세기』 필사본을 둘러싼 진위논쟁의 질을 한 차원 높이는데 기여하게 되기를 바란다.

영문 초록

Since the discovery of the manuscript in 『Hwarangsegi(花郞世紀)』, it is a well-known fact that there has been the argument of authenticity with this historical material. That is because the understanding and description on history of Silla cannot help being varied completely depending on whether recognizing the manuscript in 『Hwarangsegi』 as historial material. Therefore, it is natural to thoroughly verify on this. However, as far as the argument of authenticity in the manuscript of 『Hwarangsegi』 is concerned, it seems to flow difficultly just for such sensible expectation given looking in the inside. That is because of the occurrence of tendency, which proceeds with fabricating the desired conclusion by own school, rather than close verification as time passes. As for the argument of authenticity on the manuscript in 『Hwarangsegi』, the fierce dispute was spread centering on the 1990s. However, the argument is showing tendency of being subsided ironically based on the point of time when having addressed by spending many pages in the criticism of history for 2003. Especially, since having been revealed, respectively, the theses by Kim Gi-heung and Park Nam-su, who see the manuscript in 『Hwarangsegi』 as fabrication, in 2003 and 2007, it is the real situation that anyone hasn't argued against this. However, as a result that a writer examined, there had been weak point in these people's logic. Thus, it examines by dividing into themes such as the comparison of the modified contents in manuscript, the survey on the appearance of existence in the original of 『Hwarangsegi』, the characteristics and forgery theory of the so-called ‘Janbon(殘本),’ the problem of a forgery theory through comparing Janbon(殘本) in 『Hwarangsegi』 and copy 1·2, and the forgery theory based on Byeokhaebaekpaga(碧海上白波歌) and Parangga(波浪歌). As a result, it is thought to have been possibly confirmed not to be equipped with persuasive ground and logic. The probability of 50% is secured even if selecting which one regardless of being whether or not fabrication in the manuscript of 『Hwarangsegi』. Thus, even if having guessed rightly conclusion somehow, it cannot have academic significance just with it. Accordingly, the recent research, which attached any contents without ground or logic, cannot have significance as the research achievement even if the manuscript in 『Hwarangsegi』 is clarified to be fabrication. This study is what desires to criticize just this propensity. If the researchers, who accidently became the target of criticism in this study, couldn't help having announced writing without enough ground or logic due to failing to think in advance at that time, they will need to supplement and announce the insufficient contents even if being now. Given being so, the harmful effect will be able to be recovered that gives to the academic circles in the present situation, even if the past carelessness isn't disappear. By becoming so, this study is also desired to be probably contributed to enhancing the quality in the argument of truth one-dimension further of surrounding the manuscript in 『Hwarangsegi』.
