근대지리공간의 표상으로서 지형도의 기호와 실제

국문 초록

본 논문은 1910년대에 제작된 『조선기본도』의 기호들을 전수 조사하여 데이터베이스(DB)로 구축하고, 이를 바탕으로 전국의 기호 현황을 공간적으로 분석한 연구이다. 이 과정에서 역사 GIS(HGIS, Historical Geographic Information System) 방법론을 활용하여 근대지형도의 기호 위치와 특성을 설계하고 GIS 레이어로 구축하였다. 연구 대상으로 채택된 58개의 기호를 대상으로 12,343개의 사상(事象)을 확보하였고, 기호의 공간적 분포를 분석한 결과, 전체 사상 중에서 13개도 가운데 경기도가 1,575개(12.8%)에서 가장 많은 기호가 확인되었다. 그리고 조선시대 대읍(大邑)이 행정구역 당 기호 개수는 높으나, 부(府) 단위 근대 도시가 기호 밀도 측면에서는 더 우세를 보이는 점이 확인되었다. 또한, 행정시설, 산업시설, 종교시설 등이 전체 기호에서 차지하는 비율이 높게 나타났다. 이러한 결과들은 지명과의 관계, 유형별 세부 분석, 기호의 지도화 및 주제별 분포를 종합적으로 분석하는데 중요한 기초 자료로 활용될 것이다. 본 연구는 근대지형도의 기호 연구에 기반을 마련함으로써, 추후 역사지리환경의 복원을 위해 시계열 데이터와 선형 및 면형 기호에 관한 연구를 확장하는데 필요한 기초를 다졌다는 데에 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study conducts a comprehensive survey of the symbols in the ‘Joseon Basemap’ produced in the 1910s, constructs a database(DB) from them, and spatially analyzes the status of symbols nationwide based on this database. Utilizing the methodology of HGIS(Historical Geographic Information Systems), the locations and characteristics of symbols in modern topographic maps were designed and constructed as GIS layers. The study targeted 58 types of symbols, gathering information on 12,343 features. The spatial distribution analysis revealed that among the 13 provinces, Gyeonggi-do had the highest number of symbols with 1,575 entries(12.8%). It was also found that while large administrative centers(大邑) from the Joseon Dynasty had a high number of symbols per administrative area, modern cities at the bu(府) level showed greater density of symbols. Administrative, industrial, and religious facilities constituted a significant proportion of the total symbols. These results will serve as important foundational data for analyzing relationships with place names, detailed analysis by type, cartographic representation of symbols, and thematic distribution. By laying the foundation for the study of symbols on modern topographic maps, this study provides the necessary groundwork for future research on time series data and line and polygon symbols for the reconstruction of historical geographic environments.
