영문 초록

This study examined whether the TWE　scoring rubric was appropriate to rate Korean high school students' English compositions. Since the TWE was developed to assess English composition competence of those who wanted to study in American universities and colleges, its scoring rubric was not appropriate to diagnose the subjects' English composition competence accurately. This inappropriateness was well displayed in the uneven score distribution to the low end of the scale. In response to the uneven distribution, this study suggest the adjustment of the scale which eliminates six points and insert a new point between two and three points on the scale. Through the qualitative analysis, the reasons for the subjects to score the low points were examined. Inappropriate language control, particularly word usage, and lack of critical othinking abilities were among the reasons. The conclusion of this study was the recommendation of the development of a different scoring rubric for each different test situation.
