국문 초록

｢김하서전｣은 한문으로 창작된 조선 시대의 단편소설이다. 정확한 창작 시기와 작자는 알 수 없다. 조선 전기의 도학자인 하서 김인후를 주인공으로 내세우고 있으나 사건의 주요 내용은 허구이다. 이 글의 목적은 ｢김하서전｣을 현대어로 번역하는 동시에 원문 이해에 필요한 주석을 자세하게 붙여 강독 및 연구의 자료로 활용할 수 있게 하려는 것이다. 흔히 소설을 포함한 옛 서사 작품은 당대 사회를 이해하게 해주는 자료로서의 가치 정도가 인정될 뿐 인물의 상투적인 성격, 비논리적인 사건 전개와 배경 설정, 관습적이고 진부한 표현, 권선징악이라는 천편일률의 주제 등 여러 한계를 지닌것으로 평가된다. 일부 이러한 특징이 나타나지만, 글쓰기라는 관점에서 볼 때 ｢김하서전｣은 오늘날에도 활용될 만한 유용한 가치를 지니고 있다. 김인후라는 도학자를 주인공으로 삼은 이유를 알게 해주는 인물 묘사, 이후의 사건을 암시하거나 사건 사이의 논리를 마련해 주는 배경 설정, 장면 서술에 활용된 적절하고 세련된 표현 등이 이에 속한다.

영문 초록

Gimhaseojeon[金河西傳] is a short story written in Chinese characters during the Joseon Dynasty. The author and the time of creation are unknown. Gim, In-hu[金麟厚], a confucian scholar from the early Joseon Dynasty, is featured as the main character, but the most of contents appear to be fictional. The purpose of this article is to translate Gimhaseojeon into Korean language while adding detailed commentaries necessary for understanding the original text so that it can be used as material for close reading and research. Old narrative works, including classic novels, are often recognized for their value as materials that help us understand the social situation of the time. On the other way, they have many limitations, such as the stereotyped personality of the characters, the illogical development of events and setting of background, conventional and banal expressions, and the monotonous theme of poetic justice. Some of these aspects also appear in Gimhaseojeon, but from the perspective of writing skills, it has useful values that can be used even today. They are as follows: character descriptions that help us understand why the historical moralist was chosen as the main character, background settings that hint at later events or provide logic between events, and appropriate and sophisticated expressions used in scene descriptions.
