영국 역사교육에서 생태환경을 통합하려는 시도와 양상

국문 초록

본 연구는 영국의 역사교육 현장에서 환경교육의 중요성을 인식하고, 생태환경 내용을 역사교육 현장에서 통합하기 위한 시도와 역사 교과서에 서술된 현황을 소개한다. 최근 영국에서는 생태환경 교육을 모든 학생에게 필수 과목으로 제공하기 사회운동과 법제화 과정이 중요한 사회적 이슈이다. 따라서 영국 역사 수업 현장과 교과서에서 환경 관련 내용을 어떻게 서술하고 있는지 살펴볼 필요가 있다. 교과서 자유발행제를 실시하고 교과서 사용률이 현저히 낮은 영국에서는 현장 교사들의 역량과 수업자료 개발 과정에 환경교육을 접목하는 방법이 필요하다. 이를 위해 환경교육을 실천할 수 있도록 제안한 이론서들은 환경에 ‘대한(about)’, ‘위한(for)’, ‘통한(through)’ 또는 ‘안에서(in)’ 교육하는 방식을 제안한다. 이러한 방식이 교과서 서술 방식에 나타난 현황을 살펴보기 위해서 학생들이 국가시험이나 대학 입시에 필독서로 여기는 GCSE와 A-Level 교과서의 내용 서술을 분석했다. 이들 교과서에서 환경 관련 내용을 서술하는 방식은 환경을 단순히 언급하거나, 환경주의 및 환경의 역사에 ‘대한’ 상세한 서술을 보이거나, 환경의 중요성을 인식하는 대중과 정치계의 변화 등에 주목한다. 또 내용 면에서는 환경 문제가 나타나기 시작한 현대사 교과서가 가장 환경을 ‘통한’ 역사 교과서 서술이 가능함을 보여주는 유의미한 내용구성이다. 하지만 본 연구는 현재까지 영국의 역사 교과서의 내용구성이나 서술 방식은 상대적으로 환경교육 전문학자들이 제안한 세 가지 방식을 반영하지 못했고, 영국 사회가 생태환경 문제 해결을 위해 요구하는 수준에는 도달하지 못했다고 평가한다. 본 연구는 환경교육을 다루는 세계적 흐름을 소개하고, 이를 바탕으로 우리 교육에서 환경교육을 바라보는 다양한 시각과 아이디어를 소개한 점에 의의를 두면서 마친다.

영문 초록

This study recognizes the importance of environmental education in history education in the United Kingdom and introduces the current situation of attempts to integrate ecological and environmental content in history textbooks. Recently, the social movement and legislation to make environmental education a compulsory subject for all students has been an important social issue in the UK. Therefore, it is necessary to examine how environmental issues are represented in British history classrooms and textbooks. In the UK, the use of textbooks is significantly low at schools, there is a need to improve the capacity of teachers in the field and how to incorporate environmental education into the development of teaching materials. Some educational experts suggest ways of teaching ‘about’, ‘for’, ‘through’ or ‘in’ the environment for history classes. In this cotext, this articles analyzes the content narratives of GCSE and A-Level textbooks that students consider essential reading for national exams and university entrance. The ways in which these textbooks present environmental content include simple references to environments, detailed narratives ‘ about’ environmentalism and the history of environments, and attention to changes in public and political perceptions of the importance of environments. In terms of content, modern history textbook is the best to present history textbooks ‘ through’ the environment. However, this study concludes that until now the content and narrative methods of British history textbooks have not reached the level required by British society to address ecological and environmental issues. Ultimately, this study aims to introduce the global trends in environmental education to the British society and students, and to introduce different perspectives and ideas on environmental education to South Korea.
