국문 초록

본 논문은 최근 종교와 과학 사이 대화 주제라 할 수 있는 생물학의 이타성 담론에 대한 윤리적 비평을 다룬다. 도킨스와 에드워드 윌슨으로부터 시작된 이타성에 대한 진화생물학과 사회생물학의 주장은 인문학자와 종교학자들의 입장에서 볼 때 도덕, 양심, 신앙 등 인문학과 종교학의 근간을 무너뜨릴 수도 있는 발언이라는 점에서 비판에 직면했는데, 바로 그 지점이 논문이 시작되는 진앙이다. 특별히 이타성에 대한 생물학의 시비에 대해 윤리학, 특별히 레비나스의 타자윤리는 어떤 답변을 할 수 있을지에 본고는 관심한다. 윤리적 행위란 갈등과 선택 상황에서 주체가 어떤 행위를 할 것인지에 대한 판단의 문제와 수행의 문제를 다루는데, 그 과정에서 타자에 대한 관심과 배려, 즉 이타성의 문제가 주요한 동인으로 작동한다. 특별히 기독교윤리 전통에서 신은 본인의 전지전능성을 포기하고 성육신하여 전적 타자였던 인간을 향해 자신을 모두 내어준 이타성의 화신으로 등장한다. 그것이 이웃 종교와 다른 기독교의 중요한 독특성이고, 일반 윤리학과 다른 기독교윤리학이 지니는 변별력이다. 이러한 문제의식 속에서 본 논문은 다음과 같은 순서로 논의를 전개하고자 한다. 우선 리처드 도킨스의 ‘진화생물학’과 에드워드 윌슨의 ‘사회생물학’에서 말하는 이타성 논의를 따라가면서 인문적 비평을 도모할 것이다. 그 후에 『사회생물학과 윤리』를 쓴 피터 싱어의 비판의 지점들을 따라가면서 이타성에 대한 다차원적 접근을 시도한다. 이타성의 문제는 현대 타자성의 담론과도 맞물리는데, 글의 후반부는 타자윤리의 대표자라 할 수 있는 에마뉘엘 레비나스의 유전자 결정론에 바탕한 이타성 논의에 대한 비판적 성찰이다. 필자는 동일성의 원칙이 지배하는 생물학의 이타성 담론은 레비나스의 타자성으로부터 어떤 영감을 받을 수 있으리라 본다. 레비나스는 인간의 본성은 자연적 혹은 생물학적 결정론으로부터 벗어난 다른 차원에서 작동되고 있음을 말하고자 했다. 접근 가능성, 조작 가능성, 예측 가능성을 넘어가는 미지의 영역에서 아른거리는 타자에 대한 근원적 욕망이 인간의 본성일 수 있다는 발언은 인간에 대한 새로운 각성과 결단의 시간으로 우리를 인도한다.

영문 초록

This paper deals with an ethical critique of the altruistic discourse of biology, which is a topic of conversation between religion and science in recent years. The arguments of evolutionary biology and sociobiology regarding altruism, which began with Richard Dawkins and Edward Wilson, are problematic from the perspective of humanistic and religious scholars because they undermine the foundations of humanistic and religious thought in areas such as morality, conscience, and faith. That’s where this paper begins. In particular, this paper is interested in how ethics, especially Levinas’s other ethics, can respond to the disputes regarding biology and altruism. Ethics is a discipline that deals with issues of judgment in situations where a subject is faced with conflicting choices. In the process, the problem of interest and consideration for others, that is, altruism, emerges as important. In particular, in the Christian ethics tradition, God appears as the embodiment of altruism, giving up God’s power and God’s own self for the sake of human beings, total others in the eyes of God. This theological starting point is an important uniqueness of Christianity that is different from neighboring religions, and a characteristic of Christian ethics that is different from general ethics. In this awareness of the problem, this paper intends to proceed in the following order. First of all, we will pursue humanistic criticism by following the discussion of altruism in Richard Dawkins’ “Evolution Biology” and Edward Wilson’s “Sociobiology.” After that, this paper attempts a multidimensional approach to altruism, following the points of criticism of Peter Singer, who wrote The Expanding Circle (2011). The problem of altruism also coincides with the discourse of modern otherness, and the second half of the text is a critical reflection on the discussion of altruism based on Immanuel Levinas’ genetic determinism, a representative of other ethics. I believe that the altruistic discourse of biology, dominated by the principle of identity, can be inspired by Levinas’ notion of otherness. Levinas tried to say that human nature is operating at a different level, apart from natural or biological determinism. The statement that the underlying desire for the other, who languishes in the unknown realm beyond accessibility, manipulability, and predictability, may lie at the heart of human nature leads us to a new insights into and assessments of human beings.
