기후위기 시대의 신학적 인간 이해

국문 초록

본 논문은 “문제의 뿌리가 전반적으로 종교적이기 때문에 치유책도 본질적으로 종교적이어야” 한다는 린 화이트의 지적을 발판으로 삼아 기독교의 인간 이해를 문제사적 관점에서 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 기독교신학의 인간 이해에서는 하나님의 형상(imago Dei)이 중요한 개념으로 자리하고 있기에 이를 오늘날 기후위기와 관련하여 문제사적 관점에서 고찰하고, 지구공동체의 회복과 치유에 기여하며, 자연과 인간의 관계를 새롭게 정립해 줄 기독교 신학의 인간학적 대안을 모색하고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 신학사에서 전개된 하나님의 형상에 대한 해석 유형을 분류하여 간단하게 정리하고자 한다(Ⅱ). 물론 유형론이 갖는 한계로 인해 어떤 신학자의 특정한 해석은 두 가지 유형을 넘나들 수도 있다. 하지만 여기서는 개별 신학자의 해석이 아니라 상호배타적으로 분류된 유형론에 입각하여 다양한 해석의 독특한 특징들을 드러내고, 문제점이 무엇인지 분석하는 데 초점을 맞춘다. 나아가 하나님의 형상 해석과 관련해서 분류된 유형들에 묻어 있는 문제들을 살펴보고, 각각의 해석 유형이 과연 성서 본문에 근거하여 지지 받을 수 있는지, 또한 시대적 도전 앞에서 유효한 시대적 응답이 될 수 있는지를 따져 물어볼 것이다(Ⅲ). 마지막으로 이러한 분석과 논의를 바탕으로 하여 하나님의 형상으로서의 인간에 함축된 신학적 의미를 발굴하고 확장해 나갈 것이다. 하나님의 형상에 대한 신학적 해석은 텍스트 적합성과 동시에 시대 적합성을 놓칠 수 없다. 기후위기로 응축되는 총체적인 인류 생존의 위협 앞에서 신학적 인간 이해의 고유성을 유지하면서도 기존의 오해와 잘못을 바로잡고 생태학적으로 책임적인 신학적 인간 이해를 제안하고자 한다(Ⅳ).

영문 초록

Lynn White pointed out that the root of the ecological crisis lies in Christianity’s understanding of humanity, stating, “since the problem’s root is fundamentally religious, the remedy must also be inherently religious.” Based on this assertion, this paper aims to examine the understanding of the human in Christian theology from a problem-solving perspective. In particular, as the concept of the imago Dei (image of God) holds a significant place in Christian theology’s understanding of the human, the paper seeks to critically analyze this notion in the context of the contemporary climate crisis, thus contributing to a solution of the problem, and explore an anthropological alternative within Christian theology that will redefine the relationship between nature and humanity. The paper begins by categorizing interpretative types of the imago Dei developed in theological history to provide a brief overview (II). Acknowledging the limitations of typologies, which may lead some theologians to transcend specific interpretations, the focus here is not on individual theologians’ interpretations but on revealing the unique characteristics of various interpretations based on mutually exclusive typologies and analyzing the issues involved. Moving forward, the paper examines the problems inherent in the types categorized in relation to the interpretation of the imago Dei. It questions whether each interpretative type can be supported by biblical texts and whether it can provide valid responses in the face of contemporary challenges (III). Finally, building on this analysis and discussion, the paper aims to uncover and expand the theological meaning implicit in the notion of humans as being created in the image of God. The theological interpretation of the imago Dei cannot overlook both textual and contemporary appropriateness. In the face of the overarching threat to human survival presented by the climate crisis, this paper proposes foundations for a theological understanding of the human being that maintains the uniqueness of that understanding while correcting existing misconceptions and mistakes. It seeks to suggest a starting point for a theological understanding of humanity that can be integrated with the ecological concerns emerging in the context of the current era (IV).
