국문 초록

바울은 고린도후서 4:16에서 ‘속사람’이라는 인간론의 메타포를 사용한다. ‘속사람’이라는 메타포는 플라톤이 Republic(πολιτεία)에서 처음 사용하면서 헬라 세계에 널리 알려졌다. 그러나 그 용례와 의미는 사뭇 다르다. 바울이 여기서 말하는 ‘속사람’은 헬라 철학에서 말하는 이성이라거나 유대의 전통 속에 있는 영·혼도 아니다. 즉 인간을 이분 또는 삼분하려는 육·영/혼의 개념이 아니다. 여기서 말하는 ‘속사람’은 종말론적 ‘새사람’의 의미이다. 다만 고난과 죽음 앞에서 소멸하는 한시적인 ‘겉사람’과의 대조 속에서 그것을 초월하는 ‘속사람’을 사용한 것이다. 이런 극명한 대조는 이미 4:7에서부터 사용하여 4:18까지 ‘속사람’의 본문을 관통하는 일관적인 경향이다. 고난은 ‘겉사람’과 결부된 한시적인 것으로 넉넉히 감내할 수 있는 것이다. 그리고 그 고난의 끝 죽음에 이른다고 하더라도 오히려 그 뒤에는 예수 그리스도의 모범처럼 생명이 있는 것이다. 비록 ‘겉사람’은 낡아지지만, 그의 종말론적 실존인 ‘속사람’은 날마다 새로운 것이다. 즉 ‘속사람’은 인간의 내면을 의미하는 것이 아니라 그리스도 안에 있는 새로운 실존의 다른 표현이다.

영문 초록

Paul employs the anthropological metaphor of the ‘inner man’ in 2 Corinthians 4:16. This metaphor, first introduced by Plato in the Republic (πολιτεία), gained widespread recognition in the Greek world. In Paul’s usage, the ‘inner man’ does not align with reason in Greek philosophy or the spirit or soul in Jewish tradition. In other words, it does not conform to a conceptualization of the human being as divided into two or three parts—body, spirit, or soul. The ‘inner man’ referenced here denotes the eschatological ‘new man.’ In contrast to the transient ‘outer man’ that dissipates in the face of suffering and death, Paul employs the ‘inner man’ to signify a transcendent existence. This stark dichotomy is a consistent theme running through the text, introduced in 2 Corinthians 4:7 and persisting until 4:18. Suffering is portrayed as a temporary aspect connected to the ‘outer man,’ which can be endured with a sufficient amount of resilience. Even if suffering culminates in death, there is an underlying life, exemplified by the example of Jesus Christ. Despite the aging of the ‘outer man,’ the ‘inner man,’ representing his eschatological existence, is renewed daily. In essence, ‘inner man’ does not refer to the inner self of a human being but serves as another expression of the new existence in Christ.
