국문 초록

소설 《강도의 동굴 强盗洞》은 여성 영국인 선교사 夏洛特·玛丽亚·塔克(Charlotte Maria Tucker)의 장편소설 The Robber’s Cave: A Tale of Italy을 바탕으로 중국에 있는 미국인 선교사 吴板橋(Samuel Isett Woodbridge)와 중국 기독교인 진춘생(陈春生)이 공동으로 번역한 소설이다. 이 소설은 20세기 초 중국 국내외에서 환영을 받았다. 진춘생이 번역에 주도적인 역할을 한 이 《강도의 동굴》은 그가 전에 번역했던 《오경종 五更鐘》처럼 소설을 통해 기독교 선교의 현지화를 실천하려는 또 다른 시도라고 볼 수 있다. 또한 수난, 참회, 죽음 등 우여곡절한 줄거리를 통해 탕자인 호력사(昊力士)와 성도인 월비아(月飛鴉 )라는 두 명의 전형적인 인물을 만들어냈다. 소설 《강도의 동굴》은 성경적 내용이 풍부하고, 청나라 말기의 현실적 상황을 담고 있어 책 표지에 표기된 “개량사회소설”의 특징을 알 수 있다. 게다가 효제를 취지로 서양 선교사와 중국인 협력자들의 현지화 선교 책략을 구현한 동시에 청나라 말기에 손상된 전통 문화 질서의 회복을 강조하기도 한다.

영문 초록

The Robber’s Cave(《强盗洞》) is a translation of The Robber’s Cave: A Tale of Italy by British female writer Charlotte Maria Tucker (1821-1893). It was jointly translated by Samuel Isett Woodbridge, an American missionary in China, and Chen Chunsheng(陈春生), a Chinese Christian. This novel was popular in China in the early 20th century. Chen Chunsheng played a leading role in the translation process, and The Robber’s Cave can be regarded as another attempt to use novels to preach Christianity in a localized way after his translation of Five Calls. Through the twists and turns of suffering, confession and death, the Robber’s Cave creates two typical characters, the prodigal son Horace and the saint Raphael. In addition, marked as a “social reform novel”(改良社会小说), The Robber’s Cave not only has a rich biblical background, but also has a great realistic significance of the situation of China in the late Qing Dynasty. With the purpose of filial piety and fraternal duty(孝悌), it reflects the localization of the missionary strategies of the missionaries and their Chinese collaborators, and also emphasizes the restoration of the damaged traditional cultural order in the late Qing Dynasty.
