이청준의 『남도사람』 연작 고찰

국문 초록

본고는 이청준의 『남도사람』 연작을 여로형 소설로 규정한 가운데, 여로에 나선 인물의 목적이 과거지대의 삶에 대한 탐색에 있다는 점에 주목하여 논의를 시작하였다. 작품 내에서 이러한 목적은 가려진 삶에 대한 ‘스토리’를 청취하는 것으로써 달성되며, ‘스토리’의 청취는 그 청취자의 삶에 변화를 가져오는 것으로 귀결되어 또 다른 이야기를 생성하게 될 것임을 예견토록 한다. 본고는 이와 같이 ‘스토리’가 삶과의 관계에서 생명력 있게 작동하는 양상을 ‘이야기의 생태’로서 규정한 가운데, 이를 구체적으로 논의하는 과정에서 『남도사람』 연작이 삶과 문학의 일치를 추구하는 이청준의 문학관을 소설로써 자족적으로 구현하고 있는 작품군임을 입증할 수 있었다. 또한 이러한 ‘이야기의 생태’가 『남도사람』 연작이 형식적으로 나타내 보이는 주요한 특질인 중층구조의 발생론적 연원이 된다는 주장을 펼치고 있다. 한편, 본고는 ‘이야기의 생태’를 작동하고 있는 『남도사람』 연작이 ‘인지의 플롯’을 취하고 있다는 점을 밝혔다. 여로에 나선 인물은 ‘스토리’를 청취하는 과정에서 ‘사실확인’ 혹은 삶의 단면에 대한 ‘깨달음’에 이르는 바, 이는 그가 여행의 목적을 달성함과 아울러 변화함을 의미한다. 본고는 이러한 연작의 전개양상을 ‘인지의 플롯’으로 규정한 가운데, 이를 이끌어가는 스토리텔링 메커니즘에 대한 세부적인 논의를 하고 있다.

영문 초록

While defining Lee Chung-joon's series of The Men of the South as a novel of the travel fiction, this paper began the discussion by paying attention to the fact that the purpose of the person who is on the journey is to explore life in the past. This purpose within the work is achieved by listening to a 'story' about a hidden life, and listening to the 'story' results in a change in the listener's life. It is predicted that this change will create another story. This paper defines the aspect in which 'story' operates with vitality in relation to life as 'the Ecology of Stories'. In the process of discussing this 'Ecology of Stories' in detail, it was possible to prove that the series of The Men of the South is a group of works that self-sufficiently embodies Lee Chung-joon's view of literature seeking unity between life and literature through novels, not discourse. It is also argued that this 'Ecology of Stories' is the origin of the layered structure, which is the main characteristic of Lee Chung-joon's novel. On the other hand, this paper revealed that the series of The Men of the South, which operates 'Ecology of Stories', takes a ‘Plot of Cognition.’ In the process of listening to the “story,” the person who goes on a journey reaches ‘fact-checking’ or ‘enlightenment of a meaning of life’, which means that he changes as he achieves the purpose of his trip. This paper defines the narrative development pattern of this series as a 'Plot of Cognition', and discusses the storytelling mechanism that leads it in detail.
