국문 초록

이 글은 1930년대 도서목록을 토대로 당대 영창서관의 출판 경향을 탐색하고, 그 가운데 ‘문예소설’로 분류된 작품들의 특징적 양상을 살피는 데 목적을 두었다.‘신간도서목록’은 특정 시점을 기준으로 영창서관에서 출간한 소설 중 대중적 인기를 얻은 베스트셀러나 스테디셀러를 선별하여 목록화한 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 영창서관은 딱지본 소설과 밀접한 관련이 있는 출판사이다. 영창서관 출판물 가운데 실제 작품이 확인되지 않은 경우가 많은 이유는 결국 출판 미상의 딱지본 대중소설이 많은 배경과도 관련이 깊다. 더불어 저자 및 저작권, 검열 등 출판 환경과 관련된 다양한 사안이 딱지본 대중소설의 보급과 유통에 영향을 끼쳤을 것인데, 본격소설과 달리 딱지본 대중소설의 예술적 정체성이 상대적으로 인정되지 못했던 당대문단 상황과의 관련성도 고려해보아야 할 것이다. 출판물의 유통 과정에서 확인된 전근대성과 근대성의 공존으로 창작물의 저작권 침해 문제가 야기되었고, 그 피해는 대부분 딱지본 대중소설에 집중되었다. 딱지본 대중소설은 고소설과 현대소설의 사이에 놓여 높은 대중성과 상업성을 바탕으로 출판사 수익 창출의 한 축을 담당했으나 그 정체성이 모호한 것으로 인식되었고, 이는 중복 출판이나 저자명 표기혼란 문제로 표면화되었다.

영문 초록

This article explored the publishing trend of the Yeongchang Bookstore based on the New Book List in 1930s. Among them, the purpose was to examine the characteristic aspects of works classified as ‘literary novels’. The New Book List can be seen as a selection of bestsellers or steady sellers who gained popularity among novels published by the Yeongchang Bookstore. The Yeongchang Bookstore is a publisher closely related to sixpence novels. The reason why actual works have not been confirmed among the publications of the Yeongchang Bookstore is related to the background of many unknown publications. In addition, various issues related to the publishing environment, such as authors, copyrights, and censorship, affected the spread and distribution of sixpence popular novels. It is also necessary to consider the relevance of the literary situation of the time, when the artistic identity of the sixpence popular novel was relatively not recognized. And the problem of confusion in the notation of author names is also revealed. This can be said to be a problem caused by the coexistence of modernity and premodernity in the creation and distribution process of sixpence popular novels. The copyright reached them, but the subject of protection was not the actual author. Most of the damage caused by copyright issues was concentrated on sixpence popular novels.
