영문 초록

This paper seeks to examine the translations of American novels featured in Wolgan Amerika, a monthly magazine published by USIS Korea from 1949 to 1950. Specifically, the focus is on two novels with a central theme of boys: Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and William Faulkner's “Two Soldiers.” The objective is to uncover the correlation between the representation of boys in these novels and the cultural policies of the United States towards South Korea during that period. Utilizing socio-narrative theory as the analytical framework, this study demonstrates that translators crafted narratives that highlighted the American democratic spirit in the translation of Tom Sawyer and narratives emphasizing the spirit of risking one's life to safeguard a democratic nation in the translation of “Two Soldiers.” The discussion delves into how USIS aimed to underscore the significance of defending democratic ideals through these narratives, particularly during a time marked by the escalating Cold War both domestically and internationally.
