국문 초록

少論四大臣으로 辛壬士禍의 처분을 담당했던 崔錫恒은 老少의 당쟁이 극에 달하던 시기, 논란의 중심에 있었다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 생전은 물론이고 사후에도 그는 노론에 의해 비판을 받고 소론에 의해 변호되었으며, 아울러 追奪과 復官이 여러 차례 번복되었다. 왕통을 둘러싼 노소 간의 갈등으로 일어난 신임사화가 영조 연간의 충역 시비로 이어졌기 때문에, 최석항에 대한 논란은 그가 세상을 떠난 지 55년이 지난 시점, 즉 그의 행장을 지을 때에도 계속되었다. 따라서 최석항의 행장을 짓는 작자는 行錄과 같은 그의 생애 자료 중에 특정한 부분을 취사선택하여 망자에 대한 존숭과 긍정을 유도해야 했다. 달리 말하자면, 사후에도 논란의 중심에 있었던 최석항에 대한 행장은 ‘사실의 기록’을 바탕으로 한 ‘기억의 서사’가 특징적으로 나타날 수밖에 없는 것이다. 본고는 이러한 점에 착안하여 최석항 행장에서 나타나는 ‘기억의 서사’를 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 노론에 의해 지목된 죄목을 논파하여 변론한 점, 최석항의 추탈과 복관의 과정에서 당대 인물의 긍정적 발언 중 특히 왕의 인정을 집중 조명한 점, 공사의 일에 관대함과 대범함을 보여주는 일화를 열거한 점을 밝힐 수 있었다. 이 세 가지를 통해 재구된 최석항의 像은 노론의 비판과는 정반대로, 작가가 세상에 각인하고 싶었던 최석항의 모습이었다. 이처럼 행장은 망자의 생애를 살피는 객관적 자료를 넘어 문학적 자료가 될 수 있다. 특히 망자에 대한 평가가 엇갈리는 경우, 그에 대한 행장은 분명 작자의 의도된 서술 장치가 숨어 있기 마련이다. 향후에는 이러한 점을 참고하여 보다 적극적으로 행장에 대한 문학적 접근이 이어지기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Choi Seok-hang(崔錫恒), who was in charge of the disposition of SinYim Literati purges(辛壬士禍), was at the center of controversy during the period when the party strife of the Noron Party(老論) and Soron Party(少論) was at its peak. In his lifetime and after his death, he was criticized by the Noron Party and defended by the Soron Party. And as a result, his reputation has been repeatedly reversed. The controversy over Choi Seok-hang continued 55 years after his death. It was at this time that records of a decimated he's life was built. The author of Choi Seok-hang's Haeng jang(行狀) had to induce respect and affirmation for the deceased by selecting a specific part of his life data. In other words, Haeng jang about Choi Seok-hang, who was at the center of controversy even after his death, has no choice but to feature a ‘memory narrative’ based on the ‘record of facts.’ Based on this point, this paper considered the ‘narrative of memory’ that appears in Choi Seok-hang's Haeng jang. As a result, three things could be derived. First, it is the point of disputing the crime pointed out by the Noron Party. Second, it highlighted and revealed that it was recognized by the kings. Third, anecdotes showing generosity and generosity were listed. The image of Choi Seok-hang, reconstructed through these three, is the opposite of Noron party's criticism, and was the image of Choi Seok-hang that the artist wanted to imprint. From this point of view, Haeng jang can be said to be a literary material beyond objective data examining the life of the deceased. In particular, if the evaluation of the deceased is mixed, the Haeng jang surely has the author's intended description device hidden. Referring to this point, it is expected that a literary approach to Haeng jang will continue.
