Have Risk Management and Digitalization Enhanced the Efficiency of the Banking Industry in Korea?

국문 초록

본 논문은 리스크 관리와 디지털화가 2010년부터 2019년까지 국내 14개 은행의 효율성에 미치는 영향을 살펴본다. 파라미터와 은행 효율성의 사후 분포를 추정하기 위해 트랜스 로그 확률 비용함수를 설정하고 베이지안 추론 방법을 사용하였다. 마르코프 연쇄 몬테카를로 방법인 메트로폴리스 –헤이스팅스 알고리즘을 사용하여 55,000번(5,000회 번인) 반복하여 추정하였다. 리스크 관리와 비대면 서비스 수준에 대한 대용 변수는 각각 BIS 비율과 자산 대비 점포 수 비율로 설정하였다. 추정 결과, 높은 BIS 비율 그룹과 낮은 점포 수 비율 그룹은 각각 그 상대 그룹에 비해 더 효율적인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 디지털화와 리스크 관리의 증가가 국내 은행들의 효율성을 증가시켰음을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This paper examines the effect of risk management and digitalization on the efficiency of 14 Korean banks over the period of 2010-2019. A trans-log stochastic cost frontier function is set and Bayesian inference is adopted to estimate posterior distributions of the parameters and the efficiencies of the banks. Metropolis-Hastings, a Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation is run with a burn-in of 5,000 iterations in 55,000 retained draws for sampling. BIS Ratio and Branch Ratio are used as proxies for risk management and non-contact service levels respectively. The result shows that the higher BIS Ratio group and the lower Branch Ratio group are more efficient than their counterparts, indicating that increasing non-contact service and risk management have improved efficiencies of the banks in Korea.
