『대마도종가문서』를 통해 본 조선 후기의 왜관요(倭館窯) 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 18세기 초, 일본의 주문다도구에 대해서 종가문서의 『제방어호지어소물 어주문추』를 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. 『어주문추』는 왜관요 말기의 상황을 잘 대변해주는 다도구주문서라고 생각한다. 당시 일본의사기 번조 요청에 관한 조선의 대처는 우리나라 사료인 『변례집요』와 『왜인구청등록』를 통해 살펴보았다. 『변례집요』와 『왜인구청등록』에서는 조일 관계의 전체 상황을 외적인 측면에서 살펴볼 수 있었고, 『어주문추』에서는일본 주문자들이 선호한 기물과 취향에 대해서 구체적인 기호를 파악할 수 있었다. 주문자들은 대마번주의 부인·이정암 승려·로추·다이묘 등 주로 고위 계층들의 인물들이었다. 그들은 상당히 많은 품목을 다양한 그림과함께 구체적으로 주문했다. 모두 이들의 소유품이라기보다는 진상과 선물 및 접대 등에도 많이 사용되었다. 당시 일본 무가 사회의 의례에는 다도가 중요한 역할을 했고, 따라서 이에 수반되는 기물은 격식을 중시했으며 그수도 상당량 필요했을 것이다. 그러나 이러한 구청을 모두 수용하기에는 조선의 상황은 궁핍했고 어려웠으며 일본 주문자들의 기호에 충족한 제작을 하기에는 무리가 있었다. 또 때마침 대마도나 규슈 지방에 새로운 가마들이 축조되어 일본 국내에서 공급이 이루어지게 된다. 본 연구를 통해, 조선의 어려운 상황 속에서 이루어진 조일관계의 도자기 교역의 실제를 살펴볼 수 있었고, 『어주문추』를 통해 당시 일본 유력자들의 고도화된 취향 다도구에 대한 안목을 확인할 수 있었다. 왜관요는 비록 쇠퇴의 길을 걷고 있었지만 일본과의 다도구 교역에 있어서 유일무이한 중요한 가마였음은 틀림없다.

영문 초록

This study focused on the Soke document, Notes on the taste ordered pottery, about Japanese custommade tea ceremony utensils in the early 18th century. Notes on the taste ordered pottery are believed to be an order book for tea ceremony utensils that represents the final stage of the Waegwan-kiln. At that time, an attempt was made to find out the response of Joseon to the Japanese request for ceramic orders, mainly in the descriptions in Korean historical materials Byeon-lye-jib-yo and Wae-in-gu-cheong-dueng-lok. In Korean historical materials, the relationship between Joseon and Japan was examined from a diplomatic perspective. Moreover, in Notes on the taste ordered pottery, the utensils and tastes favored by the Japanese orderers could be understood. The orderers were mainly high-ranking people, such as the wife of the lord of the Tsushima Domain, priests of Itei-an, the shogun’s council of elders, feudal lords, and painters of the Kano faction. They ordered quite a few items in detail with various paintings. Rather than being used as their possessions, it is believed that they were often used as presentations, gifts, and entertainment. The tea ceremony played an important role in the rituals of the Japanese samurai society at that time. Therefore, the tea utensils accompanying it will emphasize formality and require a considerable amount. On the other hand, it was very difficult for the Joseon side to accept all such requests from the Japanese side. At that time in Joseon, peasants were living in poverty because of bad harvests, and it was difficult to procure sufficient resources (soil, firewood, and potters) necessary for orders from Japan during a busy farming season. Coincidentally, new kilns were built in Tsushima and the Kyushu region, and it became possible to supply them within Japan, so it is believed that the Waegwan-kiln naturally declined. This research revealed the scene of the Joseon-Japan ceramics trade that occurred under the severe conditions in the late Joseon Dynasty. In addition, the tastes of the influential Japanese figures in the sophisticated tea ceremony utensils in Notes on the taste ordered pottery were confirmed. Although the Waegwan-kiln declined, it was undoubtedly the only place in the trade of tea utensils between Joseon and Japan.
