장소 기억의 정치와 페미니즘적 재구성

국문 초록

본 연구는 창신동 기억담론에서 여성의 경험을 망각 혹은 누락시킨 권력 관계와 이데올로기가 무엇인지 살펴보고 어떠한 맥락과 과정 속에서 배제되었는지를 드러내는 것은 물론 ‘발굴’된 여성의 경험이 창신동의 장소성을 어떻게 재구성하는지를 밝히고자 한다. 창신동은 동대문시장과 청계천의 배후지 역할을 하면서 서울에서 주변적인 공간으로 자리했다. 창신동은 1960년대 이후 도시정책에 의해 여러 차례 개발 압력에 놓였는데, 2014년에 서울시의 도시재생사업지로 선정되었다. 하지만 도시재생사업은 국가주도의 경제성장과 남성중심적 발전주의를 추구하는 이데올로기를 재생산함으로써 창신동을 경제적 생산을 위한 노동공간으로 의미화했다. 이 과정에서 창신동 여성의 다양한 경험은 삭제되면서 비가시화되었다. 도성 밖에 위치한 창신동은 20세기에 여성들에게 다층적 의미를 지닌 장소였다. 창신동은 식민지 시대 저렴한 지대로 여성교육기관인 조선여자의학강습소·동덕여자고등보통학교·중앙보육학교 등이 이전해와 운영되었다. 한국전쟁 이후에는 도시빈민들이 많이 살았는데, 창신동 여성들이 서울시청 앞에서 재개발도시정책에 저항하며 거주권 투쟁을 벌인 적도 있다. 1970년대 이후 청계천과 동대문에 의류산업이 성장하면서 봉제업에 종사하는 여성노동자들이 거주했으며 이들을 위한 복지시설이 들어서는 등 여성노동자의 거주지로서 역할을 했다. 창신동에는 빈민여성과 여성노동자들이 밀집해 있어 이들의 자녀를 위한 탁아운동단체들이 탁아소(어린이집)를 운영하는 등 일찍부터 지역기반의 공동체 돌봄 운동이 전개되었다. 따라서 창신동은 경제적 생산은 물론 여성을 위한 교육·주거·운동·돌봄 공동체 등 사회적 재생산의 측면까지 지니는 등 다층적 장소성을 지닌 공간이었다.

영문 초록

This study examines the power dynamics and ideologies that have erased or omitted women’s experiences in the memory discourse of Changshin-dong in Seoul. It reveals the exclusionary contexts and processes, while also highlights how the rediscovery of female experiences reshapes the placeness of Changshin-dong. Historically, Changshin-dong has been a peripheral area in Seoul, serving as the hinterland of Dongdaemun Market and Cheonggyecheon Stream. Since the 1960s, it has faced various development pressures driven by urban policies. In 2014, the Seoul Metropolitan Government selected Changshin-dong as an urban regeneration project site. However, this project reproduced the ideology of state-led economic growth and masculine developmentalism, thus characterizing Changshin-dong as a labor space for economic production. Consequently, the diverse experiences of women in Changshin-dong were marginalized and rendered invisible. Changshin-dong’s geographical location, situated beyond the Fortress Wall of Seoul, held multiple layers of significance for women during the 20th century. During the colonial era, it served as a low-cost neighborhood where women’s educational institutions such as the Joseon Women’s Medical Training Center, Dongdeok Girls’ High School, and the Central Nursery School were relocated and operated. Following the Korean War, the neighborhood became home to many poor urban dwellers, and women from Changshin-dong fought for their right to reside there, staging protests in front of the Seoul Metropolitan Government against redevelopment policies. In the 1970s, with the growth of the garment industry in Cheonggyecheon and Dongdaemun, female workers in the sewing industry settled in Changshin-dong, and welfare facilities were established to support them. Given the high concentration of impoverished women and female workers in Changshin-dong, a community-based care movement emerged early on, with daycare centers to cater to their children’s needs. Therefore, Changshin-dong served as a space with multifaceted placeness, encompassing economic production and social reproduction, including education for women, housing, movement, and community-based care.
