『주역』으로 읽는 봉준호 영화 <옥자>의 문화사적 의의

국문 초록

이 논문은 『주역』을 주요 연구 방법론으로 삼아 봉준호 영화 <옥자>를 새롭게 해석하고자 했다. 나아가 <옥자>와 봉준호 영화 전반에 깃든 생태주의 세계관을 『주역』의 용어와 담론으로 새롭게 해석하면서, 양자의 상생(相生) 관계를 극대화할 수 있는 지평 융합을 시도하고자 했다. 그러나 이와 같은 시도는 국수주의적 차원의 민족주의나 자기중심적 전통성으로의 회귀를 의미하지 않는다. 오히려 서구 사회에서 이미 발흥한 탈근(현)대 사유와의 ‘생산적 대화’를 통해, 『주역』의 현대적 해석 및 계승 가능성을 충실하게 고찰하고, ‘지속 가능한 발전’으로 표상될 수 있을 생태주의 담론과의 교호 및 융합의 가능성을 모색하려 한다는 것을 뜻한다. 이 논문에서 시도된 『주역』과 생태주의 담론의 지평 융합은 <옥자>와 봉준호 영화 전체의 연구사에 있어서 새로운 방법론을 창안한 것으로 평가할 수 있을 것이다. 이는 또한 서구 생태주의 담론에 깃들어 있는 공생의 세계관과 더불어, 『주역』의 해석 담론에서 연면히 계승되어온 “시중(時中)”의 윤리학을 융합하려는 시도를 통해 좀 더 구체적으로 예시될 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문이 시도한 동·서 사유의 지평 융합 시도가 다양한 여러 논의를 촉발하면서, 좀 더 광범위한 차원에서 의미 있는 후속 연구들이 생산될 수 있기를 기대한다. 이와 같은 계승의 맥락을 통해서만, 인간과 자연, 서양과 동양, 중심과 주변, 남성과 여성 다수자와 소수자 등으로 표상되는 세계의 무수한 이원 대립 구도들을 “중(中)”의 사유 또는 “시중(時中)”의 윤리학으로 해소할 수 있는 새로운 보편주의 담론이 도출될 수 있을 것이다. 또한 그것은 ‘지속 가능한 발전’을 위한 하나의 대안 담론이자 실천 전략으로서, 긍정적인 비전과 ‘선한 영향력’을 산출할 수 있을 것으로 예측된다.

영문 초록

This paper tried to reinterpret Bong Joon-ho's movie “Okja” by using the traditional discourse of Korea and East Asia, which is represented The I Ching; Book of Changes as the main research methodology. Furthermore, the ecological worldview of “Okja” and Bong Joon-ho throughout the movie was interpreted as terms and discourse of the The I Ching; Book of Changes, and tried to merge horizons that could maximize the win-win relationship between the two. However, such attempts do not mean a return to nationalism or egocentric traditions on a nationalistic level. Rather, it means that it tried to faithfully consider the modern interpretation and succession of The I Ching; Book of Changes and explore the possibility of interaction and convergence through “productive dialogue” with ecological discourse already emerged in Western society that it could be represented as a “sustainable development”. The horizontal fusion of The I Ching; Book of Changes and ecological discourse attempted in this paper can be seen as creating a new methodology to explore “Okja” and the films of Bong Joon-ho. This can be exemplified in more detail by attempts to fuse the symbiotic worldviews embedded in Western ecological discourse with the ethics of the market that has been inherited from the interpretation discourse of the main character. It is hoped that follow-up studies will be produced on a wider scale as attempts to fuse East-West philosophy and discourse attempted by this paper trigger various discussions. Only in the context of this succession can be derived to a universal discourse which based on the reason for “appropriateness”(中) and ethics of “appropriateness for the times”(時中), and it could be solved the myriad two-way confrontations of the world, represented by man and nature, Western and Eastern, central and peripheral, male and female majorities and minorities.
