국문 초록

[연구목적] 본 연구는 대한민국으로 이주한 이민 1세대 어머니의 자녀 교육개입 성격과 특성을 탐색하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. [연구방법] 연구를 위해 질적연구를 수행하였으며, 총 21명의 이주민과 이들과 관련 된 내국인 10명을 심층 인터뷰하였다. 모든 질적연구는 사례연구 대상으로 선정된 농촌 지역에서 이루어졌으며, 효과적인 면담을 위하여 반구조화된 질문지를 사용하였다. [연구결과] 연구결과 한국에 거주하는 1세대 이주민 어머니와 그 가족이 자녀 교육에 무관심하다는 통념과 달리 대부분의 어머니는 자녀교육에 대한 높은 열망과 기대를 가지고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 하지만 이민 1세대 어머니의 높은 열망이 실제 적극적인 자녀교육 참여로 연결되는 경우는 드문 것으로 드러났다. 이와 같은 이민 1세대 어머니의 자녀교육에 대한 열망과 실제 참여 사이의 간극은 이민 1세대가 한국사회에서 겪는 여러 경험과 깊은 연관을 맺는 것으로 드러났다. 즉, 한국사회에서 겪고 있는 인종차별과 같은 부정적인 경험으로 인해 어머니의 자녀교육에 대한 효능감이 낮아지고, 이로 인해 자녀에 대한 교육참여를 스스로 제한하고 의존적인 특성을 보이게 된다. 또한 이 와 같이 현상적으로 드러나는 의존성과 제한적인 교육참여로 인해 이민 1세대 어머니에 대한 부정적인 이미지가 생산되고 이는 다시금 이주민 어머니에 대한 차별과 낮은 기대 로 이어지게 되는 것이다. [결론] 이주민 어머니의 자녀 교육참여 수준을 제고하기 위해서는, 한국사회 이주민 에 대한 편견과 오해, 만연한 인종차별로 야기된 악순환의 고리를 끊는 것이 최우선 과 제임을 확인할 수 있다

영문 초록

[Purpose] This study intends to understand the characteristics of first generation immigrant mothers’ involvement in their interracial children’s education in South Korea. [Methods] Semi-structured interview was adopted as a principal data collection method, which included twenty first immigrants and ten native Koreans related tothem.Allresidedinaruralcountywhichwasselectedasacaseforthefieldwork. [Results] In contrast to the popular stereotype of immigrant mothers and their families-that they are uninterested in their children’s education-most mothers showed high aspirations and expectations regarding their children’s education. However, as in previous studies, not all of the high maternal aspirations are actualized through their daily involvement in their children’s education. This disconnect between aspirations and behavior has not yet been explained substantially in the literature: that is, a vicious cycle of the low self-efficacy, dependency, limited maternal involvement in their children, and the ensuing misunderstandings of those mothers. [Conclusion] Through this study, it can be confirmed that in order to improve the quality of immigrant mothers’ maternal involvement in their children’s education, breaking the vicious cycle caused by the prejudice and misunderstanding of immigrant mothers in Korean society and widespread racial discrimination is the top priority.
