애국계몽기 지식인들이 인식한 가정교육(家庭敎育)의 의미 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 애국계몽기(1905-1910) 지식인들이 인식한 가정교육(家庭敎育)의 의미에 대해 고찰하는 것이다. ‘가정교육’이란 단어가 등장한 것은 20세기 전후로, 이 단어는 애국계몽기 이후에 본격적으로 사용되기 시작한 근대적 용어이다. 애국계몽기 지식인들이 가정의 역할변화를 모색하며 인식한 애국계몽기 가정교육의 의미를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 애국계몽기 가정교육은 ‘근대 보통교육의 한 분야’의 의미를 지니고 있었다. 애국계몽기 가정교육은 학교교육, 사회교육과 더불어 아동의 전인적 발달을 위한 ‘의도적’이고 ‘전문적’인 교육으로 여겨졌다. 둘째, 애국계몽기 가정교육은 ‘부모가 교육가’로서 자녀를 교육하는 것을 의미한다. 애국계몽기 가정교육은 근대 지식을 갖춘 부모가 자녀의 행복을 위해서, 궁극적으로 나라의 독립유지와 자강을 위해 자녀교육에 힘쓰는 것을 의미했다. 애국계몽기 가정교육은 근대 보통교육의 한 분야로서 신분과 성별에 상관없이 모두 배워야 할 교육으로 시작되었다는 점에서 가치가 있으며, 오늘날 ‘부모의 교육적 역할’에 대한 시사점을 마련해준다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of home education as perceived by Intellectuals during the Patriotic Enlightenment Period (1905-1910). The term ‘Home education’ first appeared around the early 20th century and is a modern term that began to be used in earnest after the Patriotic Enlightenment Period. The meaning of ‘Home education’ can be summarized as follows: First, Home education had the meaning of a field of modern education. ‘Home education’ was new knowledge learned intentionally and professionally through public discussion. Additionally, it was considered intentional and professional education for the holistic development of children, serving as the foundation for all education. Second, Home education meant parents educating their children as ‘educators’. ‘Home education’ meant parents with modern knowledge educating their own children. Parents had to possess specialized knowledge about child education for their children's happiness and ultimately for the independence and prosperity of their country. Home Education during the Patriotic Enlightenment Period has value in that it began as education that everyone, regardless of status and gender, should learn as a field of modern regular education, and it provides insights into the ‘educational role of parents’ today.
