영문 초록

This paper introduces a textbook≪Shanghai dialect in 4 weeks with Map of Shanghai≫written in English in 1940. This paper introduces the contents of the textbook and the characteristics of the phonetic notation. And through the textbook the phonological state of the Shanghai dialect of the time is also examined. When compared with the modern Shanghai dialect, many changes can be observed: the weakening of the voiced glottal fricative consonant [ɦ], and the nasals [n] and [ŋ] were already merged, and some nasal consonants changed into nasalised vowels. Also at that time, two abrupt endings -k and -h were already merged and in a complementary distribution. Further observation and more data from various fields will be needed.
