조나단 에드워즈의 개혁파 양립주의

국문 초록

조나단 에드워즈가 미국의 탁월한 철학자며 신학자라는 것은 의심할 여지가 없다. 그는 뉴잉글랜드의 최고 개혁파 목회자로 흔히 간주된다. 그러나 에드워즈 학계에서 의지의 자유에 대한 그의 견해가 고전적 개혁주의 교리인지 아닌지에 대해서는 분명 다른 소리들이 있다. 비록 에드워즈가 의지의 자유에 대한 자신의 이론을 공통적인 칼빈주의 교리로 간주했지만 말이다. 의지에 대한 에드워즈의 이해를 표준적 칼빈주의로 간주하는 학자들이 있는 반면, 어떤 연구들은 의지의 자유에 대한 에드워즈의 개념이 일종의 철학적 결정론이며 오랜 개혁주의 전통으로부터의 이탈이라고 주장한다. 후자의 주장은 필연과 우연에 대한 에드워즈의 이해가 고전적 개혁주의에서 달라졌다는 판단에 기초한다. 본고는 에드워즈와 개혁파 정통주의 신학자 프란시스 투레틴의 필연과 우연에 대한 그들의 용법과 견해를 비교한다. 비록 에드워즈가 “필연”과 “우연”의 용어를 투레틴과 동일한 방식으로 사용하지 않을지라도, 에드워즈는 필연성의 종류를 구별하되, 특히나 자연적 필연성과 도덕적 필연성을 구별한다. 뿐만 아니라, 투레틴과 에드워즈 둘 다 (모종의 신학적 결정론과 완벽하게 일치하는) 신적 예지와 작정과 양립할 수 없는 절대적 우연을 확실히 부정한다. 둘 다 신적 의지와 지식으로 말고는 의지의 자유를 포함해서 어떤 것도 발생하지 않는다는데 완전히 동의한다. 에드워즈의 견해는 투레틴의 견해만큼이나 개혁파 양립주의로 일컬어질 수 있다.

영문 초록

It is not doubtful that Jonathan Edwards is the outstanding philosopher and theologian of America. He is commonly regarded as New England's premier Reformed Pastor. But There have been several dissenting voices in the scholarships on Edwards as to whether his views of freedom of the will are classic Reformed doctrine or not, although he saw his theory of freedom of the will as common Calvinistic doctrine. While there are scholars that esteem Edwards' understanding of the will as standard Calvinism, some studies maintain that his notion of freedom of the will is a form of philosophical determinism and departs from the older Reformed tradition. The latter argument is allegedly based on the judgement that Edwards' understanding of necessity and contingency has been changed from classic Reformed thought. This essay compares their views and languages of necessity and contingency in the theologies of Edwards and Reformed orthodox theologian Francis Turretin. Although Edwards does not use the terms “necessity” and “contingency” in the same way of the Turretin, he distinguish between types of necessity, especially natural necessity and moral necessity. In addition, both Turretin and Edwards certainly deny absolute contingency incompatible with the divine foreknowledge and decree (perfectly consistent with certain theological determinism). Both fully agree that nothing including freedom of the will happens but by the divine will and knowledge. Edwards' views as much as Turretin's views can be called as Reformed compatibilism.
