국문 초록

본 연구는 16세기 스위스 종교개혁에서 중요한 역할을 한 인물이지만 우리에게 낯선 개혁자인 피에르 비레의 저항권 사상에 관한 탐구이다. 종교개혁 연구에서 소외된 인물을 역사의 전면으로 끌어내는 것은 종교개혁 역사의 실체를 온전하게 그리고 균형 있게 보여주기 위한 연구자의 노력이자 의무이다. 비레는 기욤 파렐, 존 칼빈과 함께 ‘제네바 종교개혁 삼총사’라 불리는 로잔의 종교개혁자이다. 본 연구는 먼저 비레가 어떤 사람인지 그의 생애를 비교적 소상하게 소개한 다음, 특별히 비레의 저항권 사상이 드러난 작품과 사건에 초점을 맞추어 그의 정치사상을 조명할 것이다. 비레는 16세기 종교개혁자 가운데 온건한 평화주의자로 평가받지만, 1536년 로잔의 개혁자로서 사역을 시작하여 1559년 강제 추방당하기까지 당시 로잔을 통치하고 있던 베른 당국의 행정관들과 끊임없이 갈등하였다. 필자에게는 비레의 저항권 사상이 시간의 흐름에 따라 점차 구체적으로 발전한 것으로 보인다. 1536년 로잔 논쟁에서 보여준 그의 초기 입장은 다분히 국가 권력에 복종해야 할 의무에 강조점이 있었다. 그러나 그가 교회의 자율성을 놓고 베른의 통치자와 논쟁과 갈등을 경험하면서, 부당한 정치권력에 대한 저항의 가능성을 더욱 심사숙고하게 되었다. 비레의 생애 마지막 10년 동안에는 세 차례의 프랑스 종교전쟁에 연관되고 투옥까지 당하면서 그의 저항권 사상은 더 뚜렷해졌다.

영문 초록

This study is an inquiry into the thought on the right of resistance of Pierre Viret, who played an important role in the 16th century Swiss Reformation but is unfamiliar to us. It is the researcher’s duty to show the reality of the history of the Reformation in a complete and balanced way to bring the alienated figures to the forefront of history in the study of the Reformation. Viret, along with Guillaume Farel and Jean Calvin, is a reformer in Lausanne, also called the “Triumviri of the Geneva Reformation.” This study will first introduce his life in relatively detail what kind of person Viret is, and then highlight his political thoughts by focusing on the works and events in which Viret’s idea of resistance is revealed. Viret has been regarded as a moderate pacifist among the reformers in the 16th century, but from the beginning of his ministry as a reformer in Lausanne in 1536 to his forced exile in 1559, he was in constant conflict with the Bernese authorities who were ruling Lausanne at the time. It seems to me that Viret’s thought on the right of resistance gradually developed concretely over time. His initial position in the Lausanne Controversy of 1536 emphasized the duty of submission to state power. However, as he experienced debates and conflicts with the Bernese ruler over the autonomy of the church, he became more conscious of the possibility of resistance to undue political power. During the last decade of Viret’s life, he was involved in three French religious wars and was even imprisoned, which made his idea of the right to resist more pronounced.
