한국의 절망사에 대한 탐색적 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 미국에서 시작된 절망사 개념에 대한 경험적, 이론적 논의의 전반을 소개하고, 이를 한국 사회에 적용하여 살펴본 탐색적 연구이다. 절망사라는 다소 생소하지만 이미 장기간에 걸쳐 누적적으로 영향을 미쳐온 것으로 보이는 개념에 대하여 한국적인 맥락으로 적용하여 살펴보는 것은 중요하고 시급한 문제이다. 절망사라는 개념의 도출과 관련된 이론적 논의를 살펴보고, 미국과 유럽에서 이루어진 절망사 관련 선행연구를 살펴본 결과, 사회경제적인 변화가 누적적인 박탈로 이어지고 비건강적인 행태로 나타난다는 주장에 대해 많은 학자들이 동의하고 있었다. 한편 독일과 같은 국가는 미국에 비해 안정적인 사회보장제도로 인하여 절망사의 양상이 나타나지 않는다는 점에서 중요한 발견이 있었다. 한국의 사망원인통계 자료나 사회조사 자료를 토대로 지난 10년간의 절망사 추이를 살펴보면 자살, 음주, 약물로 인한 사망의 비율은 전체 사망자 데이터 중 12.4%에 달하였다. 위험음주나 자살충동에 대해서는 감소추세에 있었으나 사회적 고립감과 전반적인 삶의 여건에 대해서는 부정적인 응답이 높아지고 있었다. 이러한 실증 분석을 토대로 절망사와 관련된 한국사회에 대한 진단과 정책적 시사점을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This study is an exploratory study that introduced the overall empirical and theoretical discussions on the concept of despair that began in the United States, and applied them to Korean society. It is important and urgent to apply the concept of hopeless death in a Korean context to the concept that seems to have accumulated influence over a long period of time, although it is somewhat unfamiliar. As a result of examining theoretical discussions on the derivation of the concept of despair and previous studies on despair conducted in the United States and Europe, many scholars agreed that socioeconomic changes lead to cumulative deprivation and unhealthy behavior. On the other hand, there was an important discovery in that countries such as Germany did not have a pattern of despair due to a stable social security system compared to the United States. Based on statistics on the cause of death or social survey data in Korea, the rate of suicide, drinking, and drug deaths over the past decade reached 12.4% of the total death data. Dangerous drinking and suicidal thoughts were on the decline, but negative responses to social isolation and overall life conditions were increasing. Based on this empirical analysis, diagnosis and policy implications for Korean society related to despair were discussed.
