조선후기 걸귀담(乞鬼譚)의 양상과 「심가괴귀」(沈家怪鬼)의 창작적 면모

국문 초록

본고는 「심가괴귀」의 창안과 그 문학적 의의를 논하였다. 이현기는 기존에 전통적으로 존재하던 걸귀담 구조를 차용하되 세부 서술과 기교에서 작가의 필치를 개입함으로써 「심가괴귀」를 적극적으로 재창작하였다. 즉, 기존의 서사 전통에서 주로 하층민을 걸귀와 결부지은 사례와는 정반대로 몰락양반을 걸귀 자리에 놓고 그를 대하는 인간 심리와 태도를 부각시킴으로써 몰락양반이 처한 상황을 희화화하였다. 뿐만 아니라, 아이러니의 기법을 서사 내 크고 작은 요소를 통해 활용함으로써 자기 처지를 제대로 인식하지 못하는 양반의 모습을 신랄하게 풍자하였다. 이상의 사실을 통해 확인한바 ‘환상적·상징적’ 방식을 취해 몰락 양반의 현실을 논한 「심가괴귀」는, 『기리총화』에서 문학적 성취를 이룬 여타 작품들과도 변별되는 독특한 특질을 지닌다. 『기리총화』에서 서사성을 강하게 띠는 작품은 곤궁한 양반을 다룬 이야기들이 많은데, 이들 이야기의 주인공은 마치 동일한 인물이 다른 작품에서 연령과 처지를 달리하여 끝없이 등장하는 것처럼 그 형상화 방식이 매우 유사하다. 그 가운데 현실주의적 작품들은 변화하는 현실 속에서 낡은 관념을 취한 양반과 새로운 시대적 흐름에 기민하게 대응하는 중하층과의 선명한 대조를 통해 몰락양반의 한계에 대한 비판적 시선을 노정한다. 그러나 「심가괴귀」는 초월적 존재를 끌어들임으로써 오롯이 몰락양반의 초상을 우스꽝스럽게 묘사하고 그 심리를 조명하는 데 집중한다. 그러면서도 귀신과 같이 피할 수 없는 존재가 그 곤경을 심화하는 것으로 처리하여 몰락양반의 곤궁한 상황에 대해 비관적 전망을 제시한다. 이현기는 당대 세태를 날카롭게 포착한 작가로서 양반이 처한 상황과 그 내부의 균열을 작품 속에 다채롭게 담아냈다. 「심가괴귀」는 몰락양반의 위기를 다룬 『기리총화』의 제 작품 가운데서도, 환상적 수법을 취하여 그 처지를 희극적이고도 비극적으로 묘출한 독특한 작품이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 기법은 근현대 작품에서 간혹 찾을 수 있는바 이현기의 문학적 수법과 인식의 지평이 인습적인 것에서 탈피한, 창조적 도약을 모색하고 있었음을 확인할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to explore how the author of Kirichonghwa, Lee Hyun-ki, satirizes the fallen yangban in “Simka Gwae-gwi”. He utilizes a traditional structure of starving ghost stories but adds his own twists and techniques to create a unique work that exposes the absurd attitudes of the yangban. Unlike traditional narratives, Lee places fallen yangban in the role of the ghost and ridicules their behavior and beliefs. He also uses irony to highlight the flawed perception of the yangban towards their own situation. Through his work, Lee criticizes the limits of the fallen nobility by emphasizing their mentality and depicting their poverty as something “fateful” that cannot be avoided. Furthurmore, what distinguishes “Simka Gwae-gwi” from other works in Kirichonghwa is its unique approach to depicting the fallen yangban. Lee Hyun-ki creates many protagonists that exhibit the typical characteristics of the fallen yangban class, but unlike other works that offer a clear contrast with the middle and lower classes who adapt to the changing realities of the times, “Simka Gwae-gwi” only focuses on the mentality of the yangban by depicting transcendent beings. At the same time, their poverty is depicted as “unavoidable” that only deepens their distress, further emphasizing the limits of their situation. To sum up, Lee Hyun-ki's use of satire, irony, and transcendent beings offers a critical perspective on the limits of the fallen yangban’s mentality and their poverty. This technique is often found in modern and even contemporary novels, and through this, we can see that Lee sought innovation in his perception and writing style from the traditional ones.
