국문 초록

1931년 5월부터 『동아일보』와 충무공유적보존회의 추진으로 전개된 이순신과 관련된 일련의 활동은 이충무공유적보존운동으로 불린다. 이 보존운동에 대한 연구는 그 성격을 민족주의 계열의 국수주의적 문화운동의 한 양상으로 규정하거나, 이 운동의 전개 과정과 대중운동으로 발전된 원인을 규명하는데 초점이 맞춰져 왔다. 또한 일제강점기 동안 이순신의 유물과 유적 관리의 종합적인 상황을 기술하면서 이 보존운동을 간단하게 언급한 논문도 있었다. 본고는 이 보존운동이 조선총독부의 제약을 받지 않은 이유와 일제강점기 동안 지속되지 못한 이유를 밝히려는 목적을 지니고 있다. 제목에 한계라고 표현한 것은 그러한 이유들이 이 보존운동의 한계를 밝히는 작업도 될 수 있다고 보았기 때문이다. 이를 위해 먼저 보존운동의 전개 상황을 개략적으로 살펴본 후 당시 보존운동에 대한 사회여론을 살펴보았다. 이어서 주도인물의 인적 구성, 주도인물의 이순신에 대한 인식, 조선총독부의 대응으로 나누어 내적인 한계와 외적인 한계를 동시에 규명하려고 했다.

영문 초록

「Dong-A Daily News」 and 「the Society for the Preservation of Yi Sun-Sin’s Remains」 did a lot of works related to Admiral Yi Sun-Sin. These works have been known as the movements for preserving Admiral Yi Sun-Sin’s remains. Some studies considered this movement as an aspect of nationalistic cultural movements. Others concentrated on the process of the movement and on finding causes why this movement had been led to public movement. And there was a study which mentioned the movement briefly, describing the management condition of Admiral Yi Sun-Sin’s remains and relics during the period of Japanese occupation. This article attempt to clarify the reason why this preservation movement was free from the restraint of Japanese Government General of Korea and the reason why the movement couldn’t continue during the period of Japanese occupation. So, first this article looks into the process of the preservation movement overall and the social opinion on the movement. And it looks into the leadership of the movement, their perception of Admiral Yi Sun-Sin and the response of Japanese Government General of Korea. As a result, this article investigates external limit as well as inner limit of this preservation movement at the same time.
