국문 초록

한국근대사 연구 분야에서 19세기 이후 서세동점과 식민지시기 정치 사상가들은 급진개화파를 중심으로 규명되고 상대적으로 유교적 지식인들에 대해서는 외면되어왔다. 또한 일제시기 독립운동사 연구가 상당히 진행되었지만 대체로 독립투쟁 전개 방식이나 결과에 관한 것이 다수이다. 따라서 본고에서는 우리 민족이 세계 다른 민족과는 달리 맹렬한 독립투쟁을 전개할 수 있었던 것을 사상적, 지성적 영향이 지대했음에 대해 분석하고자 하였다. 즉 한국 독립운동사 연구의 새로운 시도를 위해 인간 삶의 여정에서 형성된 신념과 의식 체계 등 정신적 가치의 중요성을 재검토하기 위해 문명사적, 사상사적 검토를 하였다. 따라서 일본의 침탈 과정에서 조선의 유교적 지식인들이 기존의 중화문명과 서양문명의 충돌을 어떻게 받아들였고, 그들의 인식 변화에 따라 일제시대 독립운동의 방향이 어떤 방향으로 전개되었는지 분석하고자 하였다. 따라서 본 연구의 주안점은 독립운동의 전개 과정에서 활약한 유교적 지식인이었던 김창숙과 신채호를 중심으로 그들의 문명에 대한 인식을 분석하고자 하였다. 즉 조선이 스스로 문명적으로 앞서왔다고 여긴 상황에서 야만으로 여긴 일본에 맞서 독립운동을 강력하게 전개할 수 있었던 지적 동인이 무엇이고 당시의 사상적 풍토를 한국적 상황에 맞게 어떻게 변용시켜 독립운동을 전개하였는지를 밝히고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Political philosophers in the colonial period were investigated especially with radical proponents of the enlightenment movement together with Seosedongjum since the 19th century in the studies on the Korean modern history, while the Confucian intellectuals were neglected, relatively. Though many studies had been conducted on the history of independent movement in the Japanese colonial period, most of them were related to the types of struggles for independence or their outcomes. Hence, this study was aimed to analyze what our nation had struggled for independence aggressively unlike other countries in the world in view of ideological and intellectual impacts. As a new trial of the study on the Korean independent movement history, the civilizational and ideological history was investigated to review the importance of mental value such as belief, consciousness system, and so on which were established in the course of human life journey. It was analyzed how the Confucian intellectuals in Joseon had admitted the conflicts between the existing Chinese civilization and the western one, and how the independence movement in the Japanese colonial period had been progressed according to their mind changes, during the pillaging process by Japan. Therefore, the goal of this study was to analyze the understanding on the civilization by the Confucian intellectuals including Chang Sook Kim and Chae Ho Shin in the courses of the independence movement. It is to reveal what were the intellectual motives to develop the independence movement aggressively against Japan perceived as the barbarism by Joseon perceived to be advanced in civilization, and how they developed the movement modifying the ideological atmosphere by the Korean situation at that times.
