기독교인 이승훈의 생애와 3·1운동 연합전선 형성 활동 분석

국문 초록

이승훈은 민족 수난기에 태어나 연속된 고난의 삶을 살았지만, 그 고난이 그를 위대한 인생길로 인도했다. 그는 성실과 근면 그리고 솔선수범으로 괄목할만한 대민족자본가로, 헌신적인 민족교육가로, 3·1운동을 주도한 기독교 민족지도자로 우리 역사 속에 뚜렷한 족적을 남긴 인물이다. 이승훈의 생애에 있어서 반전은 안창호와의 만남과 기독교 신앙의 수용이 크게 작용하였다. 1907년에 평양에서 안창호의 강연을 듣고 감화되었으며, 민족교육의 중요성에 눈 뜨게 되었다. 위기에 처한 조국을 구원하고자 오산학교를 설립하여 학생들을 민족지도자들로 만들기 위하여 온 정성과 마음을 쏟았다. 1910년에는 기독교 신앙을 가지게 되면서 복음에 입각한 신행일치(信行一致)의 삶을 중시하였다. 이후 그는 기독교 정신에 비추어 민족의 독립을 위하여 온 생애를 바쳤다. 그는 기독교 정신에 입각한 교육으로 많은 민족지도자들을 배출했고, 자신은 우리 민족사의 분수령을 이루는 3·1운동을 성사시키기 위해 서북지역의 장로교와 서울을 비롯한 기호 지역의 기독교계의 연합을, 연후에 기독교 세력과 천도교 세력의 연합을 이루어 내는 핵심적인 역할을 감당했다. 그는 연합하는 일에 늘 앞장섰던 민족지도자로서 3·1운동의 주역이었다. 그는 제 세력의 연합 없이는 효과적인 민족운동이 어렵다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었기 때문이다. 논문에서는 먼저 이승훈의 생애를 비기독교인으로서의 생애와 기독교인으로서의 생애로 나누어 검토한 후에 3 1운동 시기에 민족대표의 한 사람으로서 이승훈이 행한 기독교계의 연합과 기독교-천도교의 연합 활동에 대하여 분석해 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Lee Seung-hoon was born during the national ordeal and lived a series of hardships, but the hardships led him to a great life path. As a man of sincerity, diligence and initiative, he was a remarkable national capitalist, a dedicated national educator, and a Christian national leader who led the March 1 Movement. He was indeed a great mark in our history. The reversal in Lee's life was largely due to his meeting with Ahn Chang-ho and acceptance of Christian faith. In 1907, he was impressed by Ahn Chang-ho's lecture in Pyongyang, and he became aware of the importance of national education. In order to save the country from the crisis, he established Osan School to make students national leaders with all his heart and soul. In 1910, when he had a Christian faith, he valued the life of a unity of faith and action based on the gospel. Later he devoted his whole life to the national independence in light of the Christian spirit. He produced many national independence activists through education based on the spirit of Christianity. In order to achieve the March 1 Movement, which marks the watershed in the history of the nation, he played a key role in creating a united front between Christianity and Chondoism as well as a coalition of Christian communities. He was a leading figure in the March 1 Movement as a national leader who had always led the coalition. He was well aware that an effective national movement would be difficult without national unity. In this paper, we first examine Lee's life as a non-Christian and a Christian life, and then analyze the a coalition of Christian communities and the united front between Christianity and Chondoism that he performed as one of the national representatives during the March 1st Movement.
