벤자민 B. 워필드는 미국에서 가장 중요한 칼빈주의 신학자요 구프린스톤 신학형성에 지대한 영향력을 발휘한 인물로 알려져 있다. 또한 그는 19세기 후반에 불어닥친 현대주의 신학과 성경 고등비평의 도전에 대응하면서 성경 무오성이라는 교리를 창안한 신학자로도 간주되고 있다. 그에 대해 비판적인 학자들은 워필드의 성경 무오성이야말로 교회가 교리적으로 결코 체계화한 적이 없는 교리라는 것이다. 이미 오래 전에 여러 탁월한 학자들에 의하여 이러한 비판적인 견해가 얼마나 허구적인지를 어거스틴을 비롯한 초대 교부들의 저술 가운데 워필드의 무오 교리와 일치하는 요소들이 다분함을 보여 주었다. 또한 루터와 칼빈의 저술을 통해서도 그러한 점을 다시 확인할 수 있다. 웨스트민스터 신앙고백도 워필드가 명료하게 설명한 성경의 영감교리와 일치하고 있다. 워필드에게 성경은 하나님의 영감으로 기록된 하나님의 말씀이며, 그것은 또한 그 근원이 하나님 자신이고, 하나님이 주신 것이며, 영감된 하나님의 말씀이기에 무오하고 궁극적인 권위가 있음을 의미하는 것이었다. 성경을 하나님의 말씀이라는 사실을 효과적으로 변증하면서, 워필드는 현대주의의 도전에 효과적으로 대처하였다. 그는 지속적으로 교회의 성경영감교리는 사도 시대부터 견지해 온 교리임을 천명했으며, 그렇기에 성경은 하나님의 영감으로 기록된, 무오하며, 또한 권위 있는 하나님의 말씀임을 외쳤다. 이 소리야말로 워필드와 구프린스톤 신학자들이 신앙을 수호하기 위한 선지자적 외침이었다.

영문 초록

Benjamin B. Warfield was known as the most important Calvinist theologian in America, playing a major role in the formation of Old Princeton theology. And also, he was regarded as an inventor of the inerrancy of Scripture, reacting to late-nineteenth-century modernist theological and biblical-critical threats. According to his critics, what the church has believed about Scripture was never systematized in a rationalistic formula like Warfield’s doctrine of inerrancy. As many prominent scholars have demonstrated its absurdity long time ago, it is beyond dispute that all the elements of Warfield’s formulations on inerrancy are present in the early church fathers, including Augustine. Also in the writings of Luther and Calvin, there are many contentions that their view of Scripture is identical. The Westminster Confession of Faith, of course, teaches the view of scriptural inspiration that Warfield articulated. To Warfield, the Bible is the Word of God because it is an inspired book. That the Bible is inspired entails that its origin is from God, it is given by God; it is inerrant as an inspired book; and it has divine authority. By defending the Bible as the Word of God, Warfield did well his apologetic efforts against serious challenges of modernism in his times. Over and over again, he wrote of the churchdoctrine of inspiration, which was held by the church from the time of the apostles, that the Bible is the inspired, inerrant, and authoritative Word of God. This was the repeated prophetic voice of Warfield and Old Princetonians to defend our faith in God.
