국문 초록

『사반의 십자가』는 원작(原作)과 개작(改作)이 있다. 작가 김동리는 개작에서 작가의식을 보다 명료하고 뚜렷하게 드러낸다. 원작에 드러난 은유적 수사(修辭)를 제거하고 환유적 수사(修辭)를 많이 사용함으로써 사반의 행동을 통해 자신의 의도를 지속적으로 주입한다. 하지만 수사적 표현은 이면성(裏面性)을 갖는다. 환유적 수사 속에 은유적 의미가 내포되어 있어서 주제의식으로 확대될 경우 실존성과 도덕성은 양가적 의미를 띤다. 소설의 기능적인 차원에서 볼 때 문학성과 교훈성은 양가적 의미를 통해 복합적 양태를 갖게 되는 것이다. 수사적 이면성은 작가의 의도적 접근을 봉쇄하여 작품은 작가의 통제 밖에서 움직이는 생물로서 존재하게 되고 비로소 생체정치적인 역동성을 발휘한다. 『사반의 십자가』는 원작과 개작 모두 기독교 계열의 소설이 지향해야 할 미래성을 담고 있다. 이는 문학성과 교훈성의 절묘한 조화라는 장점도 있지만 수사적 기술을 적절하게 활용하지 못한 선례가 되기도 한다. 문학은 수사적 이면성 속에서 실존성과 도덕성을 발견한다. 이면적 양태는 낭만성으로 나타나기도 하고 정치성으로 변모하기도 한다. 하지만 어떠한 모습으로 나타나든 간에 수사적 기술은 소설의 문학성과 교훈성을 심도 있게 볼 수 있는 도구이자 관점이 된다. 은유와 환유의 수사적 상관성을 통해 기독교 계열의 소설의 지향점을 타진하고 나아가 문학의 진정한 기능까지 재고(再考)해 볼 수 있는 것이다.

영문 초록

There are two versions of 『Saban’s Cross』: one is the original work and the other, its adaptation. Kim Dong-ri shows his consciousness as a writer more clearly and distinctly in the adaptation. He continues to infuse his intention into the novel through Saban’s behaviors by eliminating metaphorical rhetoric displayed in the original and using more metonymic rhetoric. However, rhetorical figures have the hidden side. Metonymic rhetoric involves metaphorical meanings and when it is expanded into thematic consciousness, existentiality and morality also gain ambivalent meanings. In terms of the function of novels, literary value and instructiveness take on complex aspects through ambivalent meanings. The hidden side of rhetoric sometimes cuts off the intentional approach of the writer. A literary work exists as an organism outside of the control of the writer and sometimes it shows the dynamic quality of bio-politics. Both the original and the adaptation of『Saban’s Cross』contain the characteristics of the future which christian novels should pursue. That is because the novel created a precedent where rhetorical techniques are not utilized properly even though it achieved the beauty of the exquisite harmony of literary value and instructiveness. All literature can find out existentiality and morality in the hidden side of rhetoric. The aspect of hidden side may turn into sometimes a romantic nature and sometimes a political nature. However, no matter what aspect it takes on, a rhetoric device becomes a tool and a perspective to help look at the literary value and instructiveness of novels in-depth. Through the rhetorical correlation between metaphor and metonym it is possible to examine what christian novels pursue and further reconsider the true function of literature.
