의례회화(繪畫)의 상업적 변용

국문 초록

인도 비하르(Bihar) 주 미티라(Mithila) 지역의 여인들은 집안의 가정의례와 정화를 위한 그림을 전통적으로 그려왔다. 의례 회화라 할 수 있는 이러한 그림은 힌두교의 신화에 등장하는 다양한 신들을 표현해왔다. 이 그림은 1960년대 중반 극심한 자연재앙을 극복하기 위한 인도 정부의 정책에 힘입어 세상에 알려지게 되었다. 그 후 이 그림은 인도의 관광기념품점에서 인기 있는 품목이 되었고 마두바니 회화로 거듭났다. 마두바니 회화는 변화를 지속하면서 농촌사회의 다양한 카스트의 여성들과 남성들의 동참을 이끌었다. 농사를 짓던 마을은 그림 그리는 마을로 바뀌었고 농촌여성들은 국제적으로 주목 받는 예술가가 되었다. 농촌 화가들은 자신들의 인생사를 포함해 종교적 갈등과 부조리에 대한 내용을 그림으로 표현하고 있다. 이 연구는 의례를 위한 미티라 회화가 어떠한 과정을 통해 현대적으로 계승되어 왔는지를 규명하고 있다. 특히 마두바니 회화로 거듭난 이후 새로운 기법이나 형식을 창안한 지역 내 다양한 카스트들의 회화적 대응양태를 사회․문화적인 맥락 하에서 살펴보고 있다.

영문 초록

From generation to generation the women has been described for their family ritual and purification who are living in the region of Mithila in India. This ritual painting have expressed various gods and goddess in the myths of Hinduism. The Mithila painting became generally known by Indian government project in the middle of 1960s which project developed in order to overcome from serious disaster in agricultural village. Later this folk painting on paper became popular items in a souvenir shop and was reborn Madhubani painting. While the Madhubani painting is changed its style, all caste member in the rural society, participated working that paint. The agricultural village was changed into paint village. Women who living in the village became international artists. The village painter express their own life matter and trouble of religion on their paper. This study has aimed to examine about the process on the commercial development of the ritual painting. The various castes in the village were made new technic and styles after reborn Madhubani painting. This study is focusd on artistic confrontation between high and low caste on the socio-cultural context of the village.
