영문 초록

Lee In Soo’s first Korean version of The Waste Land was originally published in the January number for the monthly magazine, The Sinsaedae (New Generation), in 1949. The second one, an unpublished holograph manuscript, has been in the possession of the Lee’s family after his death in 1950. It was first printed in the Journal of T. S. Eliot Society of Korea in December 2006. The first Korean version appeared under the name of Lee In Soo, but in reality it was a work of collaboration by Lee and his student Kim Chi-kyu, as Lee acknowledged in his “Translator’s Note.” Collating the published translation, word by word, with the unpublished manuscript clearly shows that the published text is a partially revised and polished version based on the holograph manuscript. In fact, the published version keeps intact a great number of words, lines and passages identical with those in the holograph. Even, it often replicates mis-translations and mis-readings from the manuscript text. The published version differs from the holograph to the extent that words—nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs—are replaced with other synonyms which are more adequate in general. But some are a little strained. Perhaps, the most salient feature of the published text lies in reducing the sprawling 481 lines of the holographic text to 436 lines—only three lines more than the original poem.
