국문 초록

이 글의 목적은 존 던에 대한 엘리엇의 수용변화를 살펴보고 존 던과 엘리엇의 후기 시를 비교해 보는 것이다. 엘리엇은 긍정적으로 던을 평가했던 초기와 달리 후기에 와서 던의 작품에서 “감수성의 분열”을 발견했다고 하면서 그를 비판하였다. 엘리엇은 존 던의 작품에서 “감수성의 분열”이 나타나게 된 것은 이냐시오 성인의 영향 때문이라고 생각하였다. 엘리엇이 이냐시오 성인의 영향을 발견한 것은 존 던의 후기 작품인 종교시들이라고 생각된다. 존 던의 종교시는 이냐시오 성인의 영신수련의 묵상 구조에 기반을 두고 있고, 그 주제도 죄에 대한 묵상인데, 그것은 영신수련의 첫 번째 주간의 주제와 동일한 것이다. 엘리엇의 대표적 종교시인 네 사중주는 시간과 영원의 교차에 대한 명상을 다루었다. 엘리엇은 「번트 노튼」의 장미원, 「리틀 기딩」의 “한겨울 봄”에서 시간과 영원이 교차되는 순간을 빛, 물, 꽃등의 이미지 혹은 상징 체계를 이용하여 표현하였다. 또한 「번트 노튼」 2부에서는 “정지점”에 대한 명상을 통해서 장미원에서 경험했던 신비의 순간을 정의하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine the changes in T. S. Eliot’s acceptance of John Donne and compare Eliot’s and Donne’s religious poetry. Eliot praised Donne in his earlier criticisms for showing “unification of sensibility” in the latter’s poetry. However, Eliot in his later criticisms and lectures criticized Donne because he found “dissociation of sensibility” in Donne’s poetry. Eliot thought Donne showed “dissociation of sensibility” in his poetry under the influence of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Eliot did not mention the specific titles of Donne’s poems in which he found “dissociation of sensibility,” but I argue that it is in John Donne’s later or religious poetry that Eliot found the influence from St. Ignatius of Loyola. Holy Sonnets, a collection of John Donne’s religious poetry, uses the structure of meditation in Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, and its theme is the meditation on sin, which is the same as that of the first week in Spiritual Exercises. On the other hand, the theme of Four Quartets, Eliot’s representative religious poetry, is the intersection of time and eternity. Eliot expresses the moment of intersection of time and eternity in the rose garden of the first section of “Burnt Norton” and also in the midwinter spring of the beginning section of “Little Gidding” by employing a group of images including light, water, and flower.
