본 논문은 노발리스의 미완성작인 『하인리히 폰 오프테르딩겐』의 신화적 상상력과 파편성의 개념이 창출해 내는 불확정성의 의미에 대해서 논의하고자 한다. 이 소설은 낭만주의의 중요한 특징인 신화와 상상력의 역동성이 유럽 전체에 영향을 주었다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 한 가지 흥미로운 사실은 신화적 상상력이 해석의 과정과 밀접한 연관성을 지니고 있다는 것이다. 노발리스는 이 소설에서 하나의 완결됨을 보여주지 않는다. 흥미롭게도 작가가 일부러 끝내지 않았는지, 혹은 끝낼 수가 없었는지 알 수 없지만, 미완성의 소설로써 파편성을 지니고 있다. 그러나 본 논문은 소설에서 드러나는 그러한 미완성의 개념이 실패가 아니라, 전체를 드러내는 낭만주의적 방법임을 보여주고자 한다. 동시에 어떤 의미에서 T. S. 엘리엇과 낭만주의 사이에 연속성이 있는지 언급될 것이다. 『하인리히 폰 오프테르딩겐』에 드러나는 신화는 창조적 상상력의 근원이며 불확정성은 전체성이라는 측면을 논의함으로써, 우리는 노발리스의 소설이 엘리엇의 작품들에 드러나는 파편성을 이해하는데 도움을 얻을 것이다.

영문 초록

This essay is going to examine the meaning of indeterminacy which is created by a mythic imagination and the idea of a fragment in Novalis’s unfinished novel, Henry of Ofterdingen. The story shows how the dynamics of myth and imagination are explored in Romanticism as a Europe-wide phenomenon. One of the interesting points about mythic imagination is that it is essentially related with the process of interpretation, but Novalis does not provide the sense of completeness in the story. Intriguingly, the story itself is fragmentary in that the author did not, or could not, finish it. Yet, this essay is going to claim that the sense of incompleteness in the story is not a failure, but rather refers to the Romantic way of representing the wholeness. At the same time, it will be mentioned in what sense there is a continuity between T. S. Eliot and Romanticism. By discussing the myth as the source for a creative imagination and the indeterminacy as the wholeness in Henry of Ofterdingen, we may see how the investigation of Novalis’s novel may help us to understand the fragmentary aspects of Eliot’s works.
