국문 초록

엘리엇 시 「크리스마스트리의 재배」에 나타난 경이로움과 두려움은 다소 밝고 교훈적이어서 『성당에서의 살인』에 나타난 경이로움과 두려움만큼 무겁고 장중하게 느껴지지 않고 있다. 『성당에서의 살인』에서는 슬퍼해야 할 죽음과 즐거워해야 할 탄생이 평화나 구원 등 기독교의 신비로 연결되고 있지만, 「크리스마스트리의 재배」에서는 이러한 신비가 아동에게는 경이로운 체험이면서 동시에 두려움으로 정의되고 있어서이다. 결국 「크리스마스트리의 재배」는 노년과 아동의 순수함과 단순성을 찬양하며 성자 루시의 삶과 순교를 신비롭게 조명한다. 이러한 신비는 아동에게 경외심을 주던 같은 신비이며, 이를 잃어버린 영혼과 세상에 대한 심판을, 즉 죽음의 두려움을 초월한 아동의 순수한 즐거움과 겹쳐 있다. 우선 경이로움이 놀라워 두려움으로 느껴지고, 그리고 두려움은 냉혹한 삶의 현실과 죽음에서 오는 모순이다. ‘크리스마스트리’가 엘리엇에게 주는 의미는 천사의 예언과 함께 온 예수의 탄생 그리고 아이의 신비로운 경험, 그리고 살며 겪어야 할 수난과 영광, 이어 노년의 행복한 죽음과 평화에서 찾아진다.

영문 초록

Eliot wrote the poem, “The Cultivation of Christmas Trees,” in 1954 when he was 66 at the time of Christmas. The poem is thus concerned about the childhood experience of Christmas in an adult’s memory: wonder and fear. The two words that seem to be suggested in the “Interlude” of Eliot’s poetic drama, Murder in the Cathedral, signify martyrdom and peace. In the play, Becket says: “the true martyr is he who has become the instrument of God.” Yet, St. Lucy, even a martyr, is approached in “The Cultivation of Christmas Trees,” different from Murder in the Cathedral, even though they all remind Eliot of wonder in Jesus’s birth and fear of death in old age. Eliot believes that innocence can come with ‘gaiety’ we may experience in childhood as well as in old age. Eventually, with the birth of Jesus Christ and His sufferings and death for salvation, Eliot knows this truth very well in St. Lucy’s life, not in St. Becket’s, when he gets old, remembering gay happiness in his childhood experience and realizing it in actual life to death. He shows this truth in old age with the poem: innocent ‘gaiety’ in wonder and even in fear of death as if cultivating Christmas trees.
