국문 초록

니체는 현대 사회의 문제점을 신의 죽음에 의해 만연된 허무주의라고 생각했다. 니체가 진단했던 이런 허무주의적 양상은 엘리엇의 초기 작품들 특히 「게론션」과 『황무지』에서 표현되었다. 그러나 니체가 기존의 교회가 예수의 가르침 중 죄와 심판을 강조하고 사랑을 강조하지 않은 것에서 신의 죽음을 야기시켰다고 주장한 반면에 엘리엇은 성육한 예수의 본질을 인간이 알아보지 못한 것에서 인간의 절망적 상황이 발생했다고 보았다. 니체는 허무주의를 극복하기 위해서 영원회귀 사유를 주장하였다. 니체의 영원회귀 사유에 따르면 생성은 변화이자 생명이며 곧 존재이고, 모든 순간은 의미가 있다. 영원회귀는 일종의 사유실험으로서 인간의 삶에 대한 태도를 시험하는 것이다. 한편 엘리엇의 후기 시 『네 사중주』에서 세상만물은 유전의 법칙에 따라서 변화하는데, 이것은 니체가 중요하게 생각했던 생성과 연결될 수 있다. 하지만 니체의 생성은 곧 존재로서 가치우위에 있는 반면에 엘리엇의 세계는 유전의 법칙에 지배를 받지만 영원과 시간이 교차하는 순간이 있기 때문에 인간에게 의미와 가치를 준다.

영문 초록

This paper compares Nietzsche’s thought with Eliot’s works. Nietzsche considered the problem of the modern society as nihilism caused by death of God. I argue that the aspects of nihilism are found in Eliot’s early works, especially “Gerontion” and The Waste Land. However, Nietzsche insisted that the established church brought about death of God because it emphasized sin and punishment, but not love of Jesus Christ’s teachings. On the other hand, Eliot thought that men faced nihilistic situation because they couldn’t recognize Jesus Christ’s essence, that is, Incarnation. Nietzsche suggested eternal recurrence to overcome nihilism spread over the European countries. According to Nietzsche’s theory of eternal recurrence, becoming is change, life and being, and every moment is meaningful and inevitable. According to Nietzsche, eternal recurrence is a kind of the thinking experiment and tests a man’s attitude toward his life. I think Nietzsche’s becoming corresponds to the turning world in Eliot’s Four Quartets because its world is under the law of flux and changes ceaselessly. While Nietzsche’s becoming is being and very valuable, Eliot’s world is under the law of flux but can give men meaning and value because there is moment when eternity and time intersect.
