국문 초록

엘리엇의 ‘객관적 상관물’론과 주코프스키의 ‘객관주의’ 시학은 객관성을 강조하는 모더니즘 시학의 대표적인 시론들이라 할 수 있다. 낭만주의의 주관성 또는 자의식 과잉에 대한 엘리엇의 문제의식은 시적 의지의 부여를 “침탈하는 의도”로 바라보는 주코프스키의 ‘객관주의’ 시학에 의해 계승되고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 엘리엇의 ‘객관적 상관물’이 “외부 대상과 감정의 완벽한 적합성”이라는 재현의 한 완성된 순간을 전제하고 있다면, 주코프스키는 시 언어를 물질적이고 유동적인 대상으로 보며 재현의 불완전함을 당연한 것으로 제시한다. 엘리엇이 대상이나 상황 등 객관적인 형상을 부여한다면, 주코프스키는 그것이 자신의 모습을 스스로 드러낼 때까지 기다리며 그 불완전한 과정 자체를 ‘객관’의 정의 속에 포함시키려 한다. 스티븐스의 후기 시와 시론은 이런 모더니즘의 객관성 중심의 시학의 전통을 이어받으며 확장시키는 면이 있다. 특히 그의 ‘추상화’ 개념은 실제와 시인 자신을 동시에 추상화함으로써 인식 또는 창조의 새로운 ‘장’을 열어놓으려 한다.

영문 초록

Eliot’s ‘Objective Correlative’ and Zukofsky’s objectivism can be said to represent modernist poetics based on ‘objectivity,’ both of which epitomize the transformation from the romantic poetics of authorial self-expression to a new poetics. But Zukofsky’s objectivism is differentiated from Eliot’s ‘Objective Correlative’ in that the totality in the objectivists poetics lies not in “this complete adequacy of the external to the emotion” but in a continuous process of “thinking with the things as they exist.” That is, Eliot tries to accomplish a completed meaning by imposing an objective object or situation to what is inexpressible, while Zukofsky waits for it to appear and suggest itself. Later poems and poetics of Wallace Stevens can be said to inherit and expand this objectivity-centered poetics of modernism. Especially his ‘abstraction’ tries to open ‘a field’ of recognition or creation by abstracting both reality and the poet himself, which shifts our attention from the mind’s power to interpret an object to “a series of objects in field,” and leads to a new way of American poetry beyond modernism.
