엘리엇의 『하마』에 나타난 시적 전략

영문 초록

The aim of this article is to study the technical strategies of one of the quatrain poems, “The Hippopotamus” in 1917. This poem shares the common traits of the other quatrain poems: the appearance of instinctual, brutish, and action-centered characters like Sweeney as a main character and the dramatic presentation of “the objective correlative” in the formal stanzas. In addition to these general traits, Eliot employs in “The Hippopotamus” the unique methods such as the antithetical contrast between the Hippopotamus and the “True Church” and the dichotomic judgement on the two in the final three stanzas. From the survey of “The Hippopotamus” I have found that the simple antithetical device of comparison as well as the compact regular stanzaic form help to conceal the poet’s severe criticism on the spiritually corrupted Church. And Eliot’s description of the final judgement on the lazy, instinctual Hippopotamus, who is welcomed into Heaven while the Church remains in the fetid earth proves that Eliot’s judgement on the two is based on his profound knowledge of the Bible. In addition to these, this poem gives a chance partially to correct Eliot’s perspective on man from his obsessive inhibition toward man’s flesh, woman and sex to the unified thinking on the wholeness of man’s flesh and mind, which can be regarded as an important role of “The Hippopotamus” along with the other quatrain poems in Eliot’s poetic development.
