국문 초록

프랑스의 생리학자 끌로드 베르나르(Claude Bernard, 1813-1878)는 생리학의 과학으로서의 지위를 확보하고자 한 동시에, 생리학의 고유성 또한 정초하고자 한 학자로 평가받는다. 이러한 평가는 베르나르가 생명 과학의 ‘고유성’을 주장한다는 점에서 생기론자(vitaliste)는 아닌지, 혹은 생명 과학과 다른 과학의 동질성을 확보하고자 했다는 점에서 유물론자(matérialiste)는 아닌지에 대한 논쟁을 야기했다. 베르나르에 대한 기존의 연구는 베르나르가 사용한 개념의 변천에 집중하여 이러한 논쟁에 답을 내리고자 했다. 이에 대비하여, 본 연구는 베르나르의 주저인 『실험의학연구서설』(Introduction à l"étude de la médicine expérimentale)에 범위를 한정하여 베르나르의 이론이 생기론자의 것인지 유물론자의 것인지를 결정해보고자 했다.

영문 초록

Claude Bernard(1813-1878), a physiologist of France, is evaluated as a scholar who tries to secure the status of the physiology as a science, at the same time, tries to found the indigenity of the physiology. Such an evaluation results the argument about whether he is a vitalist or materialist. The former evaluates Bernard as a vitalist, because he argues that there is distinct characteristics in physiology. On the contrary, the latter evaluates Bernard as materialist, because he tries to secure the homogeneity between physiology and other domains of sciences, such as physics and chemistry. Existing researches tried to suggest an answer to this disputation, by analysing the transition of concepts which Bernard uses. In contrast, this research tries to suggest an answer, by restricting the scope of analyse to Introduction à l'étude de la médicine expérimentale.
