국문 초록

인간은 이야기를 하는 동물이다. 서사는 삶을 살아가면서 인간이 겪게되는 경험을 이해하고 재구성하여 전달하는 역할을 하고, 이를 바탕으로 삶의 의미를 찾도록 해준다. 의학에서도 환자의 이야기를 귀담아 듣고 그 이야기를 통해 환자의 고통에 다가가려는 ‘서사적 전통’이 오랜 기간 존재해 왔다. 그러나 의료 기술의 발달과 더불어 현대 의학이 점점 더 기계화되고 비인간화되는 오늘날, 의학의 ‘서사적 전통’은 점차 빛을 잃어가고 있다. 하지만 서사는 생의학의 질병 개념으로는 포착할 수 없는 질병 체험의 문제를 이해하는 데 유용하다. 질병 체험 서사는 질병이 몸, 시간, 자아의 측면에서 한 인간에게 얼마나 큰 영향을 주는 사건인지를 이해할 수 있게 해 준다. 그런 의미에서 현대 의학은 질병 체험 서사를 자신의 영역으로 끌어들어야 한다. 현대의학의 큰 결함으로 일컬어지는 환자 소외, 비인간화 등의 현상은 생의학이 환자나 의료인들의 주관성과 감성을 수용하지 못한 것에 기인하기 때문이다. 질병 체험 서사를 통해 환자는 질병이 자신의 삶에 갖게 되는 의미를 적극적으로 해석하고 탐구하는 기회를 갖게 된다. 의료인 또한 서사를 통해 환자의 실존적 고통에 다가갈 수 있을 뿐 아니라, 의료인이 갖추어야 할 실천적 지혜와 공감 등의 태도와 감수성을 기를 수 있다.

영문 초록

Man is a storytelling animal. Human experience is understood, reconstructed and transmitted as a narrative form and we seek the meaning of life from the narrative. In medicine, long tradition of narrative has existed from antiquity. The doctor has always tried to listen and understand the narrative of the patient and approach the suffering of the patient through the narrative. But the more advanced modern medicine has been through the biotechnology, the more declined narrative tradition of the medicine. But the narrative is a very efficient tool to grasp the meaning of illness which can not be understood in view of biomedicine. We can understand that illness plays an important role in human life, especially body, time and the self through the illness narrative. We can understand the illness as a meaningful event of life through the illness narrative. So the illness narrative should be included in the realm of modern biomedicine. Many problems of modern biomedicine such as alienation and dehumanization of patients have been attributed to intolerance of subjective aspects of patients and doctors. The patient will have an opportunity to interpret and explore the meaning of life through the illness narrative. And the doctor can also approach the suffering of patients and develop the practical wisdom with empathy through the illness narrative.
